Learn from five remarkable professors in this set of One Day University presentations on African American History. The term African American generally denotes descendants of enslaved Africans who are from the United States, and constitute the second largest racial group in the US. African-American history began in the 16th century, with Africans being sold to European slave traders and transported across the Atlantic to the Thirteen Colonies. During Reconstruction, they gained citizenship and the right to vote, but due to White supremacy, they were largely treated as second-class citizens and found themselves soon disenfranchised in the South. These circumstances only slowly changed due to participation in the military conflicts of the United States, substantial migration out of the South, the elimination of legal racial segregation, and the civil rights movement which sought political and social freedom.

In 1692, a small Puritan community in Massachusetts became the stage for one of the darkest episodes in American history. The Salem Witch Trials, fueled by superstition, religious zeal, and the fear of the unknown, led to over 150 accusations, countless shattered lives, and the executions of innocent men and women. But beyond the gallows and confessions lies a deeper story, one of resistance, power, and the origins of collective fear in America.
In Shadows of Salem, readers are taken inside the trials to witness how hysteria spread, how law was bent to justify injustice, and how individuals, like Giles Corey, chose silence and suffering over submission. Drawing on historical records, legal precedents, and cultural analysis, this book uncovers how Salem’s legacy shaped America’s enduring relationship with fear, authority, and social control.
From the use of spectral evidence to the crushing weight of peine forte et dure, Shadows of Salem explores not just what happened in 1692, but why it continues to haunt the American imagination. It is a story of mass panic and manipulation, but also of defiance and resilience, an essential lens for understanding both the past and the patterns of fear that still echo in modern society.
Perfect for readers of history, law, and cultural studies, Shadows of Salem offers a compelling examination of how hysteria becomes power, and how silence can be the most powerful act of resistance.

Secession of the South The: The...

The election of Abraham Lincoln was the impetus for the secession of the South, but that was merely one of many events that led up to the formation of the Confederacy and the start of the Civil War. Sectional hostility over the issue of slavery had been bubbling for most of the 19th century, and violence had already broken out in places like Bleeding Kansas. Political issues like the Missouri Compromise, popular sovereignty, and the Fugitive Slave Act all added to the arguments.
The secession of the South was one of the seminal events in American history, but it also remains one of the most controversial. Over the last 160 years, the greatest debate over the Civil War has remained just what caused it, and as recently as April 2010, Virginia’s governor declared April “Confederate History Month in Virginia,” issuing a proclamation that made no mention of slavery. Facing an intense backlash, Virginia’s governor first defended his proclamation by noting "there were any number of aspects to that conflict between the states.” Days later, the governor apologized for the omission of slavery. In turn, the governor’s backtracking was criticized by many Southerners, most prominently the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a large organization dedicated to commemorating the Confederates. The governor later declared that there would be no Confederate History Month in 2011.
Arguments over the war’s causes are nothing new. Before the war had even ended, Confederate soldiers were asserting that they were fighting for states’ rights. In the early 20th century, prominent historians such as Charles Beard theorized that the war was based on economic differences between the North and South. Although slavery had been the dominant political issue in the 50 years leading up to the Civil War, these historians began to assert that slavery was not necessarily a factor.

"Common Ground is accessible to teachers at all levels yet firmly rooted in current questions of second language acquisition (SLA). One of its primary strengths is the authors themselves, both of whom are accomplished language teachers who understand the challenges and opportunities in communication-focused language teaching. Their experience, expertise, insight, and enthusiasm for language teaching translate into a book that is refreshingly practical for teachers, especially teachers who are striving to break from traditional drills commonly presented in textbooks. I hope this book finds its way into the hands of every language teacher who is looking for concrete examples of how SLA principles meet the realities of the classroom." —Stacey Margarita Johnson, Vanderbilt University
