Sinopse

"Beautifully conceived; dazzlingly executed . . . The book casts a bright light on the past and the future―and the future of international politics." —Kenneth N. Waltz, Institute of War and Peace Studies, Columbia UniversityIn From Wealth to Power, New York Times-bestselling author Fareed Zakaria examines the most puzzling case of a rising power in modern history—that of the United States. If rich nations routinely become great powers, Zakaria asks, then how do we explain the strange inactivity of the United States in the late nineteenth century? By 1885, the U.S. was the richest country in the world. And yet, by all military, political, and diplomatic measures, it was a minor power. To explain this discrepancy, Zakaria considers a wide variety of cases between 1865 and 1908 when the U.S. considered expanding its influence in such diverse places as Canada, the Dominican Republic, and Iceland. Consistent with the realist theory of international relations, he argues that the President and his administration tried to increase the country's political influence abroad when they saw an increase in the nation's relative economic power. But they frequently had to curtail their plans for expansion, he shows, because they lacked a strong central government that could harness that economic power for the purposes of foreign policy. America was an unusual power--a strong nation with a weak state. It was not until late in the century, when power shifted from states to the federal government and from the legislative to the executive branch, that leaders in Washington could mobilize the nation's resources for international influence.Zakaria's exploration of this tension between national power and state structure will change how we view the emergence of new powers and deepen our understanding of America's exceptional history.

Have you read books about narcissistic abuse recovery and toxic personalities? Although you feel more informed, you still find yourself going around in circles with them. Do you still have burning questions? Why are they like this? Do they continuously drain your energy with their atrocious behavior? Let's be honest. Regardless of what we do in life, narcissists will always be around. No one can completely exterminate their life of toxic personalities. They will still show up at work, unbreakable family ties, or a relationship you cannot escape. Wouldn't it be nice to deal with them completely unaffected?

Learn techniques, tools, and insight into your relationships that you won't find in any other book. There are reasons that narcissists love and lock onto empaths, givers, and lovers. As the counterpart, we have insecurities, matching traumas, imbalances, and inner wounds that must heal. Merely explaining the psychology around toxic and narcissistic personalities does not address our core issues, so we continue to repeat patterns with them. Only once we look at both sides of the relationship from a physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual standpoint can we maintain relationships without becoming trapped by negative emotions. We are in charge of those emotions, yet we do not know how to identify, heal, or balance ourselves. That's the focus of this book.

In this fascinating book, Julian Flanders examines the impact of the Hitlerjugend (Hitler Youth Movement) on Germany's young people and how it shaped German society under Adolf Hitler. By 1940 membership had reached eight million - more than 90 per cent of German children. Between 1933 and the outbreak of World War II in 1939, the movement drove a wedge between youth, the educational system, and even their own dissenting families, producing a generation of anti-intellectuals indoctrinated with Nazi ideology. On the eve of war, the Hitler Youth constituted the single most successful mass movement in the Third Reich and comprised many of its most committed Nazis. Members of Hitlerjugend went on to play a substantial role in World War II, as many underage troops fought and died for their country.

In September 2023, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan boasted that the Middle East "is quieter today than it has been in two decades." One week later, unprecedented violence in Gaza and Israel shattered the status quo and shocked the world.
Hamas's Operation Al-Aqsa Deluge punctured delusions of stability as hundreds of militants burst forth from the Gaza prison camp. In the ensuing carnage and firefights, 1,200 Israelis were killed and hundreds more taken hostage.
Israel's retaliation turned the besieged enclave into a howling wasteland. Nearly 20,000 people were killed in two months, including more than 7,000 children, and over 60 percent of homes were damaged or destroyed. Israel targeted the wounded and infirm, newborns and near-dead, as Gaza's healthcare system—hospitals, clinics, ambulances, medical personnel—came under a systematic attack unprecedented in the annals of modern warfare.
The Hamas massacre and the Israeli extermination campaign which followed together mark a historic turning point in the Israel-Palestine conflict. The reverberations have also shaken politics far beyond, not least in Europe and the United States, where gigantic, round-the-clock protests for Palestinian rights pitted politicians against the public and exposed a growing statist authoritarianism.
In this groundbreaking book—the first published about the 2023 Gaza war—leading Palestinian, Israeli, and international authorities put these momentous developments in context and provide an initial taking-stock.
Why did Hamas attack? What is Israel trying to achieve? Did this catastrophe have to happen? And is there a way forward? The book's expert contributors address these and other questions, which have never been more urgent.

How did our ancestors use the concept of demons to explain sleep paralysis? Is that carving in the porch of your local church really what you think it is? And what’s that tapping noise on the roof of your car..?
The fields of folklore have never been more popular – a recent resurgence of interest in traditional beliefs and customs, coupled with morbid curiosities in folk horror, historic witchcraft cases and our superstitious past, have led to an intersection of ideas that is driving people to seek out more information. Tracey Norman (author of the acclaimed play WITCH) and Mark Norman (creator of The Folklore Podcast) lead you on an exploration of those more salubrious facets of our past, highlighting those aspects of our cultural beliefs and social history that are less ‘wicker basket’ and more ‘Wicker Man’.

Ramakrishna was an Indian Hindu mystic and religious leader, who lived in 19th-century Bengal. Ramakrishna approached his religious life through the path of devotion to the Goddess Kali, and by the observance of various elements from Tantra, Vaishnav Bhakti, and Advaita Vedanta, as well as dalliances with Christianity and Islam. After earnest practice of various religious traditions, he held that the world's religions represented "so many paths to reach one and the same goal". His followers came to regard him as a divine incarnation, as did some of the prominent scholars of his day.

Ramakrishna started his spiritual journey as a priest at the Dakshineshwar Kali Temple. Soon his mystical temperament gained him widespread acknowledgment amongst the general public attracting to him various religious teachers, social leaders, Bengali elites, and common people alike; he eventually taught his disciples, who later formed the monastic Ramakrishna Order. After his death, his chief disciple Swami Vivekananda popularized his ideas and founded the Ramakrishna Math, which provides spiritual training for monastics and householder devotees, and the Ramakrishna Mission, to provide charity, social work, and education.

Sarada Devi was the wife of Ramakrishna. Devi is also reverentially addressed as the Holy Mother by the followers of the Sri Ramakrishna monastic order. She played an important role in the growth of the Ramakrishna Movement.
