Good Money Part II - The Standard

Summary

The second part of this collection presents five articles that lay the foundation for some of the Nobel Prize–winning economists most controversial ideas.

The two volumes of Good Money present a comprehensive chronicle of F.A. Hayek’s writings on monetary policy. Together, they offer readers an invaluable reference to some of his most profound thoughts about money.

Good Money, Part II: The Standard offers five more of Hayek’s articles that advance his ideas about money. In these essays, Hayek investigates the consequences of the “predicament of composition.” This principle works on the premise that the entire society cannot simultaneously increase liquidity by selling property or services for cash. This analysis led Hayek to make what was perhaps his most controversial proposal: that governments should be denied a monopoly on the coining of money.

Using a proven three-part framework, this book shows how anyone-from a CEO to frontline employee-can play a pivotal role in creating a diverse and welcoming workplace.

Creating a diverse workplace needs to be an ongoing effort, not just the subject of an occasional training. What can you do to help? Celeste Warren, vice president for global diversity and inclusion at Merck, says you can become a diversity and inclusion ambassador. These people are committed to helping everyone see the importance of inclusive and equitable practices.

Warren offers a straightforward three-stage model:
    1.	Become aware of your own conscious and unconscious biases.
    2.	Take an inventory of your surroundings: what is getting in the way of there being an inclusive environment in your organization?
    3.	Develop a personal action plan.

Depending on readers' positions, the actions they take can be as simple as consistently raising DEI-related issues in staff meetings or as far-reaching as leading an employee resource group or developing a new hiring policy. In separate chapters, Warren offers specific advice for chief diversity and inclusion officers, C-suite leaders, frontline managers, human resources practitioners, and individual contributors. Featuring tools, exercises, and examples, this book offers everyone the opportunity to help make diversity a workplace reality.

    Creating Great Choices - A...

A practical four-step methodology for any leader or manager facing a tough choice, and for creating integrative solutions to big, complex and pressing problems. Conventional wisdom-and business school curricula-teaches us that making trade-offs is inevitable when it comes to hard choices. But sometimes, accepting the obvious trade-off just isn't good enough: the choices in front of us don't get us what we need. In those cases, rather than choosing the least worst option, we can use the models in front of us to create a new and better answer. This is integrative thinking. First introduced by Roger Martin in The Opposable Mind, integrative thinking is an approach to problem solving that uses opposing ideas as the basis for innovation. Now, in Creating Great Choices, Martin and fellow Rotman expert Jennifer Riel vividly show how they have refined and enhanced the understanding and practice of integrative thinking through their work teaching the concept and its principles to business and nonprofit executives, MBA students, even kids. Integrative thinking has been embraced by organizations such as Procter & Gamble, Deloitte, Verizon, and the Toronto District School Board-all seeking a replicable, thoughtful approach to creating a "third and better way" to make important choices in the face of unacceptable trade-offs. The book includes new stories of successful integrative thinkers that will demystify the process of creative problem solving. It lays out the authors' practical four-step methodology, which can be applied in virtually any context: - Articulating opposing models - Examining the models - Generating possibilities - Assessing prototypes Stimulating and practical, Creating Great Choices blends storytelling, theory, and hands-on advice to help any leader or manager facing a tough choice.

Choosing music as a profession reveals a reality that the respective person has embarked on a mission of a never-ending and lifelong journey that has become the core of the entire life span. All but the most measured, motivated, determined and passionate people will tame the odds and hone the skills to an extent to stand above the rest and taste success. But by doing so, the mindset has to be molded to an absolute intensity and calibrated to prudent decision-making prowess.
The digital music industry has gone a long way in the last decade and a half since the advent of the internet of things. But major stumbling blocks still very much exist. Platforms like Google Play, Spotify, iTunes, etc. are open to notable recovery compared to the prior days of illegitimate file sharing but the myriad service proposals and revenue models make it hard to interpret the precise efficacy of each platform as to what these can individually offer to musicians and music companies. Therefore, a large quantity of data is pressed into the process, sifting for purity in the wake of new business ethics.

PepsiCo's award-winning chief design officer reveals the secret to creating life-changing innovations: putting human needs at the center of any design process.

In every industry, new technologies have lowered the barrier to entry like never before. Either you design exceptional products, brands and experiences, or somebody will beat you to it. And Mauro Porcini - PepsiCo's and 3M's first ever chief design officer - says, the key to real, world-changing innovation is to put people first. Putting people first requires what Porcini calls unicorns: people who are in love with people and who have a genuine fire in them to create meaningful solutions for actual human beings. In this book, he describes them, celebrates them, and details their superpowers so you can find them, hire them, grow them, and retain them. Some have qualities you might expect-the ability to dream and an attention to detail-but when was the last time you heard an executive ask  prospective hires if they were kind or humble? Porcini uses his journey across startups and multinational corporations, through successes and failures, to create a handbook for modern innovators. This book is written by a celebrated designer, high-level corporate executive, and a decent human being.
