Summary

Covert missions are failing, Fleet officers are vanishing, and Naval Intelligence is losing its eyes, ears, and the ability to strike at its foes.  After Zack Decker and Hera Talyn, the Special Operations Section's deadliest agents, narrowly escape betrayal for the third time in a row, the Marine suspects something more than bad luck is in play. For years, the Fleet has been fighting a shadowy cold war against factions in the Commonwealth determined to strangle democracy and give birth to an empire. Has that war turned hot without warning? In a quest for answers, Zack Decker volunteers to undertake his riskiest mission yet. With treason rampant at the heart of the Fleet, perhaps even within Naval Intelligence itself, he and Talyn must disappear until they discover the identity of their unseen enemies.
Along the way, Decker will come face to face with humanity's worst impulses and its noblest spirits. And though he can't trust his colleagues and superiors, other than his partner Hera, he knows he can always trust his Pathfinder comrades to stand tall against disloyalty. The Marine Corps' elite will gladly join him in teaching traitors the real meaning of unrestrained covert warfare. After all, spy or not, Zack Decker is still one of the Few.

Brookmyre's Parlabane novels have sold more than one million copies in the UK, where he is a perennial bestseller. He is an important and well-loved figure in Scottish crime writing, along with the likes of Denise Mina and Val McDermid.

We are working hard to build Brookmyre's American audience and as part of that effort have signed up two titles from his backlist that are favorites among his international audience and which we will publish for the first time in the US: All Fun and Games Until Somebody Loses an Eye and The Sacred Art of Stealing.

These earlier novels hew closer to the Carl Hiaasen-style blend of dark humor, oddball characters, and ingenious plotting for which Brookmyre originally became known. All Fun and Games Until Somebody Loses an Eye won the 2006 Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize, the UK’s only literary award for comic literature (other winners include Alexander McCall Smith, Edward St. Aubyn, Howard Jacobson, Will Self, and Gary Shteyngart).

Brookmyre’s most recent frontlist title, The Last Hack (2017), received incredible review coverage, including raves from Maureen Corrigan in the Washington Post and Daneet Steffens in the Boston Globe. The book was mentioned by both Carl Hiaasen and Diana Gabaldon in the Washington Post round-up "What your favorite writers are reading this summer" and by Val McDermid in the Observer's round-up of "best holiday reads 2017." It was also longlisted for the 2017 McIlvanney Prize for Scottish crime book of the year and received blurbs from Lorenzo Carcaterra, John Gilstrap, Diana Gabaldon, Chris Pavone, Joe Ide, and Thomas Perry.

Though incremental, we've seen a nice upward sales trend for Brookmyre's recent books. 2016's Black Widow netted almost double the number 2015's Dead Girl Walking did in cloth, and we have shipped almost 30% more copies of The Last Hack than we did for Black Widow.

Brookmyre has devoted fans among readers and critics here in the US, including Charles McGrath at the New York Times.

With the aid of the Indian Shaman Conawago, Duncan McCallum has begun to heal from the massacre of his Highland clan by the British. But his new life is shattered when he and Conawago discover a dying Virginian officer nailed to an Indian shrine tree. To their horror, the authorities arrest Conawago and schedule his hanging. As Duncan begins a desperate search for the truth, he finds himself in a maelstrom of deception and violence. The year is 1760, and while the British army wishes to dismiss the killing as another casualty of its war with France, Duncan discovers a pattern of ritualistic murders that have less to do with the war than with provincial treaty negotiations and struggles between tribal factions. Ultimately he realizes that to find justice, he must brave the sprawling colonial capital of Philadelphia. There the answers are to be found in a tangle of Quakers, Christian Indians, and a scientist obsessed with the electrical experiments of the celebrated Dr. Franklin. With the tragic resolution in sight, Duncan understands the real mysteries underlying his quest lie in the hearts of natives who, like his Highland Scots, have glimpsed the end of their world approaching.

Thirty-five-year-old Rae Sullivan owns a thriving home décor shop in the San Francisco Bay area, near majestic Mt. Tamalpais (to locals, The Sleeping Lady). But when her business partner, Thalia, confides that she has a lover in France, Rae’s comfortable life starts to unravel. Soon, an anonymous note-writer threatens to reveal the affair, and Thalia—who, unswayed by Rae’s warnings, insists on confronting the blackmailer—turns up dead in Golden Gate Park.

The police, convinced the crime was a random mugging, are dismissive of Rae’s story of blackmail. Then a scandal from Rae’s past job comes to light, and the police start to eye her as a suspect. To clear her reputation and ensure justice for Thalia, Rae decides it’s up to her to unmask the murderer—despite her husband’s objections.

Rae’s sleuthing leads her to France, where she enlists the help of Thalia’s handsome half brother. As they collaborate to catch the killer, sparks fly between them, and Rae has to contend with these newly aroused feelings—even as she strives to outmaneuver a cold-blooded murderer who wants to silence her.
