  ‘Fear and Trembling’ is a philosophical work by Søren Kierkegaard, published in 1843 under the pseudonym Johannes de Silentio (John of the Silence). The title refers to a line from the book Philippians 2:12, "...continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling" which in its turn may be a reference to Psalm 55:5, "Fear and trembling came upon me..." Kierkegaard wanted to understand the feeling that must have arisen in Abraham when God tested him with the sacrifice of Isaac. When one person sees one thing, and another sees something else in the same thing, then the one discovers what the other conceals. The more an object of observation belongs to the world of the spirit, the more important is the way the observer is constituted in his innermost nature, because everything spiritual is appropriated only in freedom, but what is appropriated in freedom also comes forth. The difference, then, is not the external but the internal, and everything that makes a person impure and his observation impure comes from within.

  Richard Bell Davies was one of the most important characters in the history of naval aviation. Despite a traditional naval education - he was among the last cadets to be trained under sail - he was quick to grasp the potential of aircraft, and backed his vision by privately learning to fly. This allowed him to join the Naval Air Wing in 1913 and he enjoyed a very active, but hair-raising career during the Great War, including winning the VC for a daring rescue of a fellow pilot while under heavy fire. Because of his unique breadth of experience he was transferred to experimental work, where he played a major part in crucial developments like arrestor gear, deck barriers and the 'island' superstructure that define the modern aircraft carrier. As the first man to regularly land and take off from such ships, he did much to prove the value of shipboard aviation. After the war, in an Admiralty post, he continued to promote the flying interests of the Navy, and the book provides a first-hand chronicle of the struggles with the Air Ministry over policy and control. Although he retired in 1941, he accepted a lower rank to command one of the newly invented escort carriers, so his service ended as it had begun, at the cutting edge of naval aviation. This wonderfully active, and hugely significant career is related with a charm, modesty and humour which make the book enthralling and memorable.

  Ram Shastri Prabhune conducted an enquiry and found Raghunathrao the culprit in addition to another fifty persons of which there was one female servant. 'The law,' he thundered 'was above the individual.'
  The intrepid judge fearlessly argued the point and told Raghunathrao on his face that he was himself found to be the chief culprit and as such deserved the capital punishment. Raghoba asked indirectly whether a person who had committed a crime under unavoidable circumstances and now wanted to repent could seek penance.
  When his point was put forth, Ram Shastri boldly declared, 'Dehant prayaschitta shivay doosra kahi prayaschitta nahin,' meaning 'the only penance was capital punishment or a death sentence.' Never before in the history of India or for that matter in any country a sitting judge had passed a death sentence on the ruling monarch. It was a rare show of judicial independence which we possibly do not see even in today's times. Those present in the court could not believe what they had just heard. There was a hushed silence...
