Summary

After eluding a kidnapper in London, an unperturbed Amelia Peabody accompanies her unconventional family to Cairo once more—only to be ensnared almost immediately in a web of stolen treasures and bloodthirsty cults. Villainy is running rampant in Egypt this 1907 archaeological season, but the members of the intrepid Peabody-Emerson clan have already proven themselves to be formidable adversaries. However, when a mint-condition papyrus of the Book of the Dead falls into their hands, and the corpse of an unscrupulous dealer in stolen antiquities is found floating in the Nile, the Emersons' prospects for surviving this excavation season unscathed appear increasingly dim.

The unusual family of French Impressionist master Jacob Abraham Camille Pizzarro takes center stage in The Marriage of Opposites. Summary of Alice Hoffman's The Marriage of Opposites is set in the early to late 1800s, focusing on the artist and his equally strong-willed mother, Rachel Monsanto Pomié Petit Pizzarro.
Rachel longs for Paris although her grandparents long ago fled France for St. Thomas, an island in what is now the US Virgin Islands, where Jews could be citizens. Her grandparents brought only an apple tree to remind them of the orchards they once owned. Her father, Moses Monsanto Pomié, tells Rachel stories of Paris often despite the fact he has never been there. Although no one is persecuting them at the moment, the rapidly growing Jewish community on St. Thomas tries to keep a low profile to ensure that things stay that way. Rachel, however, is determined not to be a mouse. She wants to soar like a hawk…

As the Red Scare grips America, a midwestern literature professor becomes an unlikely hero in the struggle for freedomProfessor Silas Timberman has never been one for theatrics. A quiet American literature professor at a mid-sized college, Timberman decides to build a semester’s course around the democratic ideals of Mark Twain—a subject that under normal circumstances would not arouse the suspicions of the university administration. But as the Korean War rages on and congressional investigations of potential Communists gain traction, no amount of ideological nuance is safe. When Timberman is asked to renounce his work or face the repercussions, he finds that not only his tenure but also his very freedom is at stake. Inspired by Fast’s own persecution at the hands of the House Un-American Activities Committee, Silas Timberman is a gripping record of the injustices of McCarthyism and a rousing ode to those who fought against it. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Howard Fast including rare photos from the author’s estate.

This New York Times–bestselling saga of two brothers in postwar America, the basis for the classic miniseries, is “a book you can’t put down” (The New York Times).  Siblings Rudy, Tom, and Gretchen Jordache grow up in a small town on the Hudson River. They’re in their teens in the 1940s, too young to go to war but marked by it nevertheless. Their father is the local baker, and nothing suggests they will live storied lives. Yet, in this sprawling saga, each member of the family pushes against the grain of history and confronts the perils and pleasures of a world devastated by conflict and transformed by American commerce and culture.   A memorable novel by one of America’s greatest twentieth-century authors, Rich Man, Poor Man offers a gripping ride through America between the Second World War and Vietnam. It was made into one of the first primetime TV mini-series, and starred Nick Nolte, Peter Strauss, and Susan Blakely.  This ebook features an illustrated biography of Irwin Shaw including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.
