Sinopse

In "Behind the Scenes," Elizabeth Keckley offers a compelling insider's account of the tumultuous era of the American Civil War, intertwining her personal narrative as a formerly enslaved woman and her unique position as a dressmaker to Mary Todd Lincoln. Crafted with an evocative prose style, Keckley's memoir delves into the intricate social fabric of the White House, providing a rare glimpse into the lives of the Lincoln family and the political machinations surrounding the presidency. This work occupies a critical place in the literary canon, reflecting the voices of marginalized communities while shedding light on the profound intersections of race, class, and power during a pivotal moment in American history. Elizabeth Keckley's own life story informs her poignant observations throughout the memoir. Having developed her skills in dressmaking while enslaved, she earned her freedom through tenacity and industry. Her close relationship with Mary Todd Lincoln not only afforded her unparalleled access to the heart of American politics but also placed her in the unique position of bearing witness to both the personal and political struggles of those in power. "Behind the Scenes" is highly recommended for readers interested in American history, social justice, or women's studies. Keckley's authentic voice and incisive observations provide invaluable insights into the complexities of race and class while challenging traditional narratives. This work invites readers to engage deeply with an essential perspective often omitted from historical discourse.

A chilling journey through the corridors of power, Empire of Pain exposes the rise and fall of one of the most powerful families in American pharmaceutical history. At the heart of the opioid epidemic lies a dynasty that built an empire on pain—driven by ambition, protected by influence, and sustained by denial.
This gripping narrative unveils how a fortune was forged not just with innovation, but through manipulation of public trust, regulatory loopholes, and aggressive marketing. As addiction swept across the nation, the architects remained hidden behind boardroom walls and museum wings.

John Davys Beresford was born on 17th March 1873. His life was blighted by infantile paralysis which left him partially disabled.
After an education at Oundle school he trained to be an architect. However, he quickly decided that his life was to be centred on a literary career. His first offerings were in drama and as a journalist.
As well as being a book reviewer for the Manchester Guardian he contributed to New Statesman, The Spectator, Westminster Gazette, and the Theosophist magazine The Aryan Path.
His spiritual journey in early adulthood had claimed him as an agnostic, in defiance of his clergyman father. This view he later abandoned in preference to describing himself as a Theosophist and a pacifist.
As well as many novels, many themed with spiritual and philosophical elements. Beresford was also a gifted short story writer particularly across the science-fiction, horror and ghost genres.
All of these elements helped him to obtain a prominent place in Edwardian Literary London.
John Davys Beresford died on the 2nd February 1947. He was 73.

A quest is never what you expect it to be.
Elizabeth Madeline Martin spends her days in a retirement home in Cape Town, watching the pigeons and squirrels on the branches of a tree outside her window. Bedridden, her memory fading, she can recall her early childhood spent in a small wood-and-iron house in Blackridge on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg. Though she remembers the place in detail – dogs, a mango tree, a stream – she has no idea where exactly it is. ‘My memory is full of blotches,’ she tells her daughter Julia, ‘like ink left about and knocked over.’
Julia resolves to find the Blackridge house: with her mother unsettled, lonely and confused, would this, perhaps, bring some measure of closure? So begins a journey that traverses family history, forgotten documents, old photographs, and the maps that stake out a country’s troubled past. Kind strangers, willing to assist in the search, lead to unexpected discoveries of ancestors and wars and lullabies. Folded into this quest are the tender conversations between a daughter and a mother who does not have long to live. Taken as one, The Blackridge House is a meditation on belonging, on the stories we tell of home and family, on the precarious footprint of life.
