Summary

OLD ITALIAN LACE. Volume II. Originally published in 1913. INTRODUCTION: THE two laces of Italy are like two sisters, needle-made lace being the elder and bobbin-made the younger or, to use another figure of speech, needle-lace is the classic tongue of Italy and the bobbin-make is its provincial dialect clear, vivacious, emphatic, sharing the merits and defects of the populace. Our needle-laces are each and every one of Venetian origin, if we except the drawn-thread work of Sicily, which is more embroidery than lace and take their names from the manner in which they are worked reticello, punto - tagliato, punto in aria, i.e. mesh-stitch, cut linen work, stitch in the air. The bobbin-or pillow-laces are described as being Venetian, or Genoese, or Milanese, or of Abruzzi according to the places whence they spring, and it is interesting to notice how tenaciously they cling to the characteristics of their respective birthplaces. The American underground music scene is exploding everywhere—not just in New York City and L.A. (although we've got those cities covered too!): In Washington, D.C. . . . Ian MacKaye and Fugazi inspired the straightedge culture, which had kids everywhere drawing black X's on their hands in magic marker. In Omaha, Nebraska . . . A young Conor Oberst, aka Bright Eyes, started writing and performing gut-wrenching love songs at the tender age of thirteen. On Long Island, New York . . . Taking Back Sunday and Brand New battled for emo supremacy and the fragile hearts of a million teenage girls. From the coauthor of the cult-worthy Everybody Hurts: An Essential Guide to Emo Culture comes Wish You Were Here—a combination travel guide and tortured history covering everything from what constitutes proper rock critic etiquette in Minneapolis to why pop-punk bands in Chicago have so much suburban angst, to how freegans in the Bay Area can feed themselves on a budget that would make frugal Rachael Ray's face blush.

Each mark is called a “tangle,” and you combine various tangles into patterns to create “tiles,” or small square drawings.

Each of the six chapters explores a different aspect of Zentangle:Basics and EnhancementsTangles and Value PatternsGeometric and Organic PatternsUnderstanding and Using ColorDefining and Using StyleCreating the Rest of Your Zentangle Journey

Each exercise includes new tangles to draw in sketchbooks or on Tiepolo (an Italian-made paper), teaches daily tile design, offers tips on related art principles, and contains an inspirational “ZIA” (Zentangle Inspired Art) project on a tile that incorporates patterns, art principals, and new techniques.

Drawing Zentangles is a relaxing and replenishing diversion that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. In addition to its soothing benefits, a Zentangle practice can also help with self-image, phobias, addictions, pain management, conflict resolution, and coping with grief.

Based on the true story of renowned social psychologist Stanley Milgram, “Please Continue” recounts the infamous obedience experiments at Yale in the 1960s. In that study, participants were asked to administer strong electric shocks to a subject who gave the wrong answer to a question, not knowing that the shocks were fake, and they were the real subject of the study. The play examines how the experiments gave insight into the nature of authoritarianism and individual morality.Includes an interview about science and ethics with Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, a Professor of Education at the Rossier School of Education, a Professor of Psychology at the Brain and Creativity Institute, and a member of the Neuroscience Graduate Program Faculty at the University of Southern California. Please Continue is part of L.A. Our Miss Brooks was a big radio hit from the get go. Eve Arden may not have been the original first choice but she made the role her own and gathered individual awards by the armful.

All the way up until its debut in 1949 women had been, as in much of life, the subordinate gender, supporters and flag-wavers rather than equals or the stars.

Our Miss Brooks helped change that. Here was a woman, not confined to life as a housewife. She was confident, funny and layered with sometimes conflicting emotions, trying to gain a boyfriend of her choosing and holding down a job as a high-school teacher. It was quite a menu.

Jeff Chandler played her shy biology teacher love interest, Mr Boynton. And the dynamics and laughs between themselves, the students, their colleagues, and principal, all played by a very fine cast, make this situation comedy one of radios funniest and finest.

    -Let’s go join the fun.

The conclusion of the uncensored oral history that sheds light on the infamous final years of Andy Warhol’s Silver Factory. The late 1960s brought seismic shifts to Andy Warhol and life at the Silver Factory. The hub of his avant-garde scene shifted from the Factory on Manhattan’s 47th Street to the downtown bar Max’s Kansas City; new stars like drag queens Jackie Curtis, Holly Woodlawn, and Candy Darling began to replace Warhol’s old favorites; and a shocking act of violence left him paranoid and mistrusting of even his closest friends. Told by the actors, artists, writers, and hangers-on who populated and defined the Factory, Your Fifteen Minutes Are Up is an unprecedented exposé of these tumultuous times.   By 1967, it seemed to many that the Factory had outlived its fifteen minutes of fame. Superstars like Edie Sedgwick, who had reached the height of stardom only the year before, were now running out of money and falling victim to drug addiction. Some Factory dwellers had falling-outs with Warhol, while others, like Lou Reed and John Cale of the Velvet Underground, got caught up in disputes of their own. When radical feminist Valerie Solanas shot and nearly killed Warhol, the artist had already relocated to the White Factory in Union Square, leading to further rifts within the group. Intimate interviews with scene insiders and candid photos from Billy Name portray the true stories behind the legends and mystique of the Silver Factory.
