Summary

One of Sports Illustrated’s Top 100 Sports Books of All Time—a history of soccer as mesmerizing as the game itselfThe beautiful game deserves a beautiful book, and Eduardo Galeano—one of Latin America’s most acclaimed authors—has written it. From Aztec champions sacrificed to appease the gods, to the goals that were literally scored into wooden posts in Victorian England, to Spain’s victory in the 2010 World Cup, Soccer in Sun and Shadow is a history of the sport unlike any other.Galeano portrays the irruption of South American soccer that made the game sublime: the elegant, mischievous, joyful style based on deft dribbling, close passes, and quick changes in rhythm, perfected by poor black children who had no toy but a rag ball. He describes the superstitions that vex players, the martyrdom of referees, the exquisite misery of fans, the sad denouement of stars past their prime.Striding across the pages are players born with the ball—and entire nations—at their feet: Arthur Friedenreich, the son of a German immigrant and a black washerwoman, who first brought Brazilian style from the slums into the stadiums; Brazil’s Garrincha, whose body, warped by polio, could make the ball dance; and the Dutch great Ruud Gullit, who campaigned against apartheid on and off the pitch. And, of course, Beckenbauer, Pelé, Cruyff, and Maradona, a man blessed with “the hand of God” and a left foot equally as divine.Soccer in Sun and Shadow traces the rise of the soccer industry and the concurrent voyage “from beauty to duty”: attempts to impose a soccer of lightning speed and brute force, one that disdains fantasy and forfeits play for results. Eduardo Galeano, who describes himself as “a beggar for good soccer,” gives the world’s most popular sport all the poetry, passion, and politics it deserves.

Barry Stone, author of 1001 Walks You Must Experience Before You Die, delves into some of the lesser-known aspects of the world's most famous – and not-quite-famous-yet – trails.

The perfect accompaniment to practical guidebooks, Stone relates how slings and carabiners kept him from falling headlong off the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and reports on the progress of the continental-wide monster, the Trans Canada Trail, gaps in which are still being filled by countless grass-roots communities.

With walks that will appeal to everyone regardless of ability, The 50 Greatest Walks of the World includes British classics such as the Pennine Way, Offa's Dyke Path, and the Old Man of Hoy as well as personal favourites such as Italy's Cinque Terre Classic and the Isle of Skye's Trotternish Ridge, one of Britain's finest ridge traverses with almost 2,500m of ascents. Whether it's a climb, a stroll, or a life-changing slog, this book has the walk for you.

On 15 April 2012, it will be 100 years since the Titanic
sank. Since that fateful night, stories about the sinking have become
legendary - how the band played to
the end, how lifeboats were lowered half-empty - but amongst the films,
novels and academic arguments, only those who were there can
    separate truth from fiction.

After the sinking, inquiries into the loss of 1,517 lives (out of
2,223 aboard) were held in both the UK and US. The proceedings produced
1,000 pages of transcripts. Some of the testimonies were inevitably less than impartial, but as a whole the
transcripts represent the most thorough and complete account of the
sinking, told in the voices of those who were there.

For the first time these transcripts have been specially edited and arranged chronologically, so that they tell the story of
the Titanic's sinking as a narrative, rather than a list of
questions and answers in a courtroom. The
witnesses are transformed into characters in a much bigger
story, and the events are described from different perspectives of people in
every part of the ship, from a stoker in the boiler room escaping his
section before the watertight doors sealed behind him, to first class
passengers trying to buy their way onto lifeboats.

Capturing the disbelief, the chaos and the terror of the disaster, this
unique book brings to life the tragedy through the voices of those who
    survived it.

Yang 24-Step Tàijíquan is one of the most widely-practiced Tàijíquan forms in the world today, and the form that most people first learn. Gentle enough to be suitable for the elderly, yet challenging enough to stretch even the most experienced practitioner, it is also one of the most accessible and rewarding.

In his new book, James Drewe provides a comprehensive and detailed explication of the postures and movements of the form. For each, he describes exactly how the weight flows, how to use the hands, how to move the limbs, and how to relax into the movement, clearly explaining each step with the aid of foot patterns and photographs. Sections on the internal aspects of Tàijíquan, descriptions of the subtle variations that may be made when performing certain movements, and even instructions on how to fit the movements to music are also included.

This comprehensive guide to Yang 24-Step Tàijíquan is an invaluable resource for taiji practitioners at all levels, including beginners, as well as taiji instructors, and students of other martial arts.
