Summary

In the thick of the Cold War, McCain investigates death threats against an alleged redThe citizens of Black River Falls are polite, understanding, and respectful—except when it comes to communism. Joe McCarthy has been dead for two years, but men like Richard Conners are still fighting to clear themselves of his accusations. He hires private investigator Sam McCain to protect him, but no sooner has Sam taken the case than Conners turns up dead. The local sheriff gives McCain twenty-four hours to find his client’s killer. Although the obvious suspect is one of the local red haters, McCain isn’t positive that politics is the motive. In Black River Falls, murder is never cut and dried.

Under assault by the criminal underworld, two cops strike backThey call him the Alien. A petty hood with a habit of battering his enemies with a baseball bat, he earned his name for carrying out a hit while watching Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic—and sticking around to finish the film afterwards. The Alien’s latest target is Detective Sergeant Brant, an old-fashioned policeman whose easy brutality has won him no love on London’s south side. The Alien breaks into Brant’s flat, clobbers him with his Louisville slugger, and tortures him until he passes out. When Brant awakes, the Alien is gone, and the cop has a thirst for blood. With the help of his partner, the cancer-stricken Chief Inspector Roberts, Brant will lay waste to London. But when his vendetta leads to something more fearsome than a bat-wielding psychopath, he’ll wonder if perhaps he should have stayed on the floor.

Milton is the man the British government calls on to eliminate the worst of the worst: the enemies of the state that MI5 and even the military can’t stop.
Years of state-sanctioned murder have taken their toll. Milton is troubled by nightmares, a long line of ghosts who torment his dreams. He resolves to make his next job his last and, then, perhaps, he can start to make amends for everything that he has done.
Sharon Warriner is a single mother in the East End of London, suicidal with fear that she’s lost her young son to a life in the gangs. After Milton saves her life, he promises to help. But the gang, and the charismatic rapper who leads it, is not about to cooperate with him.
As London burns through summer riots, Milton finds himself in unfamiliar territory, dealing with an unfamiliar foe. And when his employer sends another agent after him, the odds against him are stacked even higher.
