Summary

In 1950s Iowa, a murder-suicide forces a lawyer to put aside his rock-and-roll grief Sam McCain loves Buddy Holly because he’s the only rock-and-roll star who still seems like a dweeb, and Sam knows how that feels. With the unrequited love of his life at his side, Sam drives more than three hours through the snow to watch his idol play the Surf Ballroom. That night, Buddy Holly dies in the most famous plane crash in music history, but Sam has no time to grieve. Because there are too many lawyers in this small town, Sam makes a living as a PI, doing odd jobs for an eccentric judge—whose nephew, it seems, has a problem only a detective could solve. His trophy wife has been murdered, and as soon as Sam arrives, the nephew kills himself, too. The police see this as a clear-cut murder-suicide, but Sam wants to know more, diving into a mystery by Ellery Queen Award–winning author Ed Gorman that will get dangerous faster than you can say “bye-bye, Miss American Pie.”

Chief Inspector Roberts combs London for the bloodthirsty psychopath who killed his brotherWhen Tommy got out of prison, he decided to become Irish. He changed his last name to Logan, moved to southeast London, and started toting a hurley—an ash stick that’s as big as a baseball bat and twice as deadly. This faux-Irish killer quickly distinguished himself as one of the south side’s smartest: a master of money laundering, front corporations, and keeping out of the way of the cops. His only weakness is his temper—and it’s about to bring his empire tumbling down. The latest target of Tommy Logan’s rage is Tony Roberts, a wasted lowlife. But the victim’s brother is one of the meanest cops in London. Chief Inspector Roberts is the last man to see Tony alive, and he promises to avenge his brother. Logan is about to find out that no hurley is hard enough to break the word of a determined cop.

With its fascinating mix of people – rich and poor, British and foreign, worthy and suspicious – London is a city where anything can happen. The possibilities for criminals and for the crime writer are endless. London has been home to many of fiction’s finest detectives, and the setting for mystery novels and short stories of the highest quality.
Capital Crimes is an eclectic collection of London-based crime stories, blending the familiar with the unexpected in a way that reflects the personality of the city. Alongside classics by Margery Allingham, Anthony Berkeley and Thomas Burke are excellent and unusual stories by authors who are far less well known. The stories give a flavour of how writers have tackled crime in London over the span of more than half a century. Their contributions range from an early serial-killer thriller set on the London Underground and horrific vignettes to cerebral whodunits. What they have in common is an atmospheric London setting, and enduring value as entertainment.
Each story is introduced by the editor, Martin Edwards, who sheds light on the authors’ lives and the background to their writing.
