Published to coincide with the centenary of the Russian Revolution in 1917, Dynastic Rule celebrates one of the great success stories of a stormy period of Russian history. This book tells the story of two directors of the State Hermitage Museum, who (for over five decades between them) have presided over what has become one of the greatest museums of the world. Saved from the Bolshevik revolution in 1917, the Hermitage was run from 1964 until his death in 1990 by Boris Borisovich Piotrovsky. His son, Mikhail Borisovich Piotrovsky, took over the reins in 1992; his tenure has recently been extended until at least 2020.

The classic of the Way and of High Virtue is the Tao Teh Ching. Its author is generally held as a contemporary of Confucius, Lao Tzu, or Laozi. The exact date of the book's origin is disputed. The book is divided into two parts, the Upper Part and the Lower Part. The Upper Part consists of chapters 1-37, and each chapter begins with the word "Tao," or the Way. The Lower Part consists of chapters 38-81, and each chapter begins with the words "Shang Teh," or High Virtue. This 1919 edition names the Lower Part as the Wu Wei, or translated variously as "not doing," "non-ado," or "non-assertion." This edition also contains a history of the book and its author, Lao Tzu, along with a discussion of the Wu Wei. Lao Tzu's classic has been cherished as suggestions, rather than commandments, for finding one's path to beauty, goodness, and quality of life through a non-assertive understanding of the Way. Hypnotic Regression Therapy, or HRT, is a type of hypnotherapy in which, following the induction of a good trance state, specialized suggestions are given to guide the client in reviewing and emotionally reframing earlier experiences that have either caused or contributed to the client's current symptoms. HRT is considered one of the most valuable hypnotherapy techniques available today, yet it remains controversial, partly due to inadequate training of psychotherapists and hypnotherapists which has contributed to numerous cases of false memory syndrome.

From an award-winning teacher, “a delightful and instructive accessory to an introductory physics course” (Physics World).

Physicists use “back-of-the-envelope” estimates to check whether or not an idea could possibly be right. In many cases, the approximate solution is all that is needed. This compilation of 101 examples of back-of-the-envelope calculations celebrates a quantitative approach to solving physics problems. Drawing on a lifetime of physics research and nearly three decades as the editor of The Physics Teacher, Clifford Swartz—a winner of two awards from the American Association of Physics Teachers—provides simple, approximate solutions to physics problems that span a broad range of topics. What note do you get when you blow across the top of a Coke bottle? Could you lose weight on a diet of ice cubes? How can a fakir lie on a bed of nails without getting hurt? Does draining water in the northern hemisphere really swirl in a different direction than its counterpart below the equator?

In each case, only a few lines of arithmetic and a few natural constants solve a problem to within a few percent. Covering such subjects as astronomy, magnetism, optics, sound, heat, mechanics, waves, and electricity, this book provides a rich source of material for teachers and anyone interested in the physics of everyday life.

“This is a book that will help make the study of physics fun and relevant.” —Mark P. Silverman, author of Waves and Grains: Reflections on Light and Learning

    Giftedness - The Perfectionist...

This book contains two titles: Title 1: Do gifted children have behavioral problems? Do they adapt? Are they perfectionists? The answer to these three questions is a resounding “yes.” However, this also raises questions that need to be answered about how to parent them, how to handle outbursts and emotional moments, etc. Most gifted children are intelligent because their senses are sharp and intense, and this can result in strong feelings of self-reflection and dramas over nothing. Sometimes, they may say that things that are easy, are actually hard, or they are unwilling to push through with certain things. So, how do you deal with that? In this book, we’ll talk about that, as well as some of the prevention efforts to make sure your highly intelligent child won’t become the victim of bullying. We’ll also touch on the question of whether you should homeschool your child or not, something that many parents struggle with. Title 2: Many parents wonder about their gifted children. They wonder where their intelligence came from, or why they behave the way they do. For example, many gifted children can be bossy or act as if they are adults, with their wits and words, while still showing immature behavior of a 4-year-old, or whatever their age is. This puzzles parents, and answers need to be given. This book does just that. Along with the topics mentioned above, this book also touches on the correlation between early birth and intelligence, the depressive thoughts some gifted children have, the meaning of IQ tests in these analyses, and the question about whether your child should skip a grade or not.
