Summary

“How did liberals get to be the way they are today?”That’s the question many Americans are asking as they witness the efforts of the most left-wing president in American history. At last, historians Donald T. Critchlow and W. J. Rorabaugh supply the answer. As the authors show, it is a mistake to see the Obama administration’s agenda as a single man’s vision. Equally flawed, they reveal, is the now-common argument that today’s liberalism is simply a continuation of early-twentieth-century progressivism. Today’s Left has embraced a more radical vision for transformative change: to remake all aspects of American life. Takeover delineates the sharp break in the history of modern liberalism that began in the 1960s. Critchlow and Rorabaugh show how leftists in pursuit of “social justice” went from protest rallies to the halls of power by rewriting the Democratic Party’s presidential nominating rules for their own benefit and using the courts to advance their radical agenda. The authors masterfully connect the dots in America’s recent history, showing the close links among such seemingly unrelated causes as radical environmentalism, nationalized health care, class warfare, abortion rights, feminism, regulating the free market, assisted suicide, sex education, and energy policies to reduce consumption.Takeover is a bold revisionist history that completely reshapes our understanding of the current political crisis.

Touching letters written by a loving couple; musty letters that detail past lives—my parents’ letters. A housewife and her sailor husband with shared immigrant experiences penned more than 500 letters during World War II, and the letters inform this book. Abridged versions of the letters weave a loving romantic story with actual events occurring on the home front and the battlefront.
The 75th anniversary of the end of World War II will be celebrated in 2020. Most of the participants have passed on. While servicemen stories have been broadly told, the tales of the resolute war wives, who had a significant impact on the outcome of the war and the well-being of the country, have not been widely shared. While some women joined the military, and others entered the workforce for the first time, the majority stayed at home to raise children. Dear Hubby of Mine focuses on this latter group of women whose stories have been under-represented and largely uncelebrated in World War II literature. Women charted new roles during the war that led to new freedoms in the years ahead and eventually brought about major societal changes.
A Midwest Book Reviewer noted that Budden’s parents' experiences and love comes to life with hard-earned lessons for others who may be struggling with separation, social change, and the demands of being war wives and husbands committed to both country and each other. Dear Hubby of Mine is not just the story of one husband and wife. It's a snapshot of the experiences of a nation under siege on the battlefields of social change.
A Reader’s Favorite reviewer lauded the excerpts from the hundreds of letters her parents exchanged over the course of World War II combined with interesting historical notes and information. The letters are a fascinating glimpse not just of the war, but also of life in the 1930s and '40s. They’re not love letters in the usual sense, but they are very loving letters that show the ordinary, everyday side of the war.

This true crime history recounts the shocking murder of an eight-year-old girl which in turn led to the last mob lynching in Prohibition Era Kansas. In April of 1932, eight-year-old Dorothy Hunter was abducted while walking home from school. Her mutilated body was later found hidden in a haystack. Not long after, police reported that a local farmer named Richard Read confessed to Dorothy’s rape and murder. But his arrest was not enough for the citizens on Northwestern Kansas. Removing him from his jail cell in Cheyenne County, a mob bound and hanged Read from a tree in what would be the state’s final lynching. In Under a Full Moon, Alice Kay Hill chronicles these grim events, vividly weaving the stories of the victims and the families involved. Taking a deep dive into the psycho-social complexities of the time, the narrative spans from the late nineteenth century to the beginning of the Dust Bowl, revealing how mental and physical abuse, social isolation, the privations of homesteading, strong dreams and even stronger personalities all factored into Read’s life and crimes.

Over the past fifty years, debates concerning race and college admissions have focused primarily on the policy of affirmative action at elite institutions of higher education. But a less well-known approach to affirmative action also emerged in the 1960s in response to urban unrest and Black and Latino political mobilization. The programs that emerged in response to community demands offered a more radical view of college access: admitting and supporting students who do not meet regular admissions requirements and come from families who are unable to afford college tuition, fees, and other expenses. This approach is based on a logic of developing scholars who can be supported at their local public institutions of higher education. In Developing Scholars, Domingo Morel explores the history and political factors that led to the creation of college access programs for students of color in the 1960s. Through a case study of an existing community-centered affirmative action program, Talent Development, Morel shows how protest, including violent protest, has been instrumental in the maintenance of college access programs. Developing Scholars argues that the origin, history, and purpose of these programs reveal gaps in our understanding of college access expansion in the US that challenge conventional wisdom of American politics.
