Summary

Liv and Skye have been best friends since pre-school. At sixteen, they are trying to make the leap from “Hello Kitty” to lace thong underwear. Skye is incredibly talented and beautiful and into everything she can find in her Mom’s medicine cabinet. Her parents don’t seem to care what she does. Her mother is an ex-model who parties all the time and her dad still travels with his punk-rock band, leaving Skye to look after her two little sisters – when she’s not hanging around with her homeless junkie boyfriend. Liv’s parents are feeling their way through a recent divorce, but everyone seems to be OK with it. Then one day, all Liv has left is Skye’s journal – her thoughts, frustrations, hopes and fears, her colorful drawings – and a lot of anger. She decides to join her mom – an award-winning documentary filmmaker – on a trek across The Himalaya as she films the charity work of a Tibetan monk. It is a long and harrowing journey for Liv who takes Skye’s journal with her to read when no one else is around. Liv has so many questions. Will Skye’s journal give her the answers she needs to be able to let go?

A novel of “sex, mystery, betrayal, intrigue and violence, all wrapped up in the disturbing world of a middle-aged woman’s deepest desires” (USA Today). The first note came on Valentine’s Day. Written with a red pen in an unfamiliar hand, it said: Be Mine. For Sherry Seymour, a community college English professor and recent empty-nester, the anonymous message was amusing and, she had to admit, flattering. When she told her husband, Jon, about it, he raised his eyebrows and looked at her with a kind of attention she hadn’t felt in some time.   As the notes continue, Sherry becomes increasingly aroused by the idea that she could inspire such feelings—as does her husband. With Jon’s encouragement, she pursues her admirer and begins a wild affair. But living in a fantasy can never last. As events spiral out of Sherry’s control, she discovers how little she knows about herself—or the men in her life. This darkly erotic thriller explores what we risk when we step away from our daily lives and allow our passions to take control.   “If there is any justice in the world, Laura Kasischke will soon be as big as Alice Sebold. . . . Kasischke’s novels are as beautifully written and as daring in their subjects.” —Detroit Free Press   “Kasischke has proven herself again to be a bold chronicler of dark obsession.” —Publishers Weekly   “What makes this erotic thriller disturbing and, therefore, successful is how convincingly Kasischke renders Sherry’s life and feelings so eerily normal and familiar.” —Booklist

This first literary collection from the Nobel Prize–winning author of The Sun Also Rises contains some of his earliest work.Three Stories and Ten Poems was originally published in a small print run in Paris in 1923. Of this collection’s three stories, two are all that remained after a suitcase containing his manuscripts was stolen in the Gare de Lyon, while the third was written the previous year in Italy. Their tight, economical prose is typical of Hemingway’s style. Each story explores themes found in the author’s later work, like masculinity and finding solace in alcohol, sports, and the outdoors. In “Up in Michigan,” a small-town waitress finds herself falling for the new man who has just bought the local smithy. In “Out of Season,” an American ex-pat living in northern Italy takes his wife on a fishing trip. And in “My Old Man,” the son of a jockey comes of age in the world of European horse racing. This collection also features ten poems, such as “Champs d’Honneur,” “Montparnasse,” and “Along with Youth.”
