How to Manage an Aid Exit Strategy - The Future of Development Aid

Summary

After almost forty years of development aid most commentators agree that aid as we know it has not worked. Aid fatigue is suffered on both the donor and recipient sides, with a wide divergence between those who call for a radical overhaul of aid delivery methods, those who advocate a complete end to development aid and those who continually demand significant increases in aid flows.

David Fee provides a refreshing, insightful and comprehensive analysis of how an exit may actually be possible - drawing on real experience and as such supplying a simple summary of recommended policy steps. The author thoroughly reviews aid for trade, regional integration and microfinance and a host of other solutions that have been proposed - arguing that an exit strategy for both donors and the least developed countries will have to consider the optimal combination of these specific initiatives to best satisfy the necessity of development and at the same time solve the problems of conventional aid.

Book Summary of The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell

About | The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell
Have you ever wondered how something can become an overnight sensation? Or how an idea or product becomes extremely popular in a short amount of time? In Malcolm Gladwell’s book The Tipping Point, he talks about how these epidemics of change start, spread, and hold their momentum. The word ‘epidemic’ is part of the way he shows how quickly something can take hold and become a massive success. He also shows how the same principles are used to spread negative behaviors and ideas. In all of his examples, something seemingly small becomes the Tipping Point. This Tipping Point is the point where it all suddenly goes very well, or very badly.

Gladwell uses research about epidemics and success stories to show how The Three Rules of Tipping Points have created such astounding events. The Law of the Few, the Stickiness Factor, and the Power of Context are all places where having the right component at the right time can lead to a Tipping Point. He shows how everything from a syphilis epidemic to the success of Sesame Street to the ride of Paul Revere were examples of using one or more of these rules to create powerful, and almost-immediate results.

Here’s what you’ll learn about in this summary:
    * The Law of the Few – how a few key people known as Connectors, Mavens, and Salesmen can compel people to engage in something new
    * The Stickiness Factor – ways of giving a message that ensure that it stays with the recipient and makes the desired impact
    * The Power of Context – understanding how powerful of an impact our environment has on us, and those around us, and how to use this to create a Tipping Point

The author of the Horrible Histories series tells the unpleasant truth about what the poor have endured in this sharp-witted, pull-no-punches book.   British prime minister Benjamin Disraeli once described the rich and poor as “two nations between whom there is no intercourse and no sympathy; who are as ignorant of each other’s habits, thoughts, and feelings, as if they were dwellers in different zones, or inhabitants of different planets.”   Today we’re well aware of the habits, thoughts, and feelings of the rich, because historians write about them endlessly. The poor, though, are largely ignored and, as a result, their contributions to our modern world are forgotten. Here, Terry Deary takes us back through the centuries with a poignant but humorous look at how life treated the ordinary people who scratched out a living at the very bottom of society. Their world was one of foul food, terrible toilets, danger, disease and death—the last usually premature. Wryly told tales of deprivation, exploitation, sickness, mortality, warfare, and religious oppression fill these pages—the teacher turned child-catcher who rounded up local waifs and strays before putting them to work; the agricultural workers who escaped the clutches of the Black Death only to be thwarted by lordly landowners; the hundreds of children who descended into the inky depths of hazardous coal mines.   You’ll discover ingenuity: how cash-strapped citizens used animal droppings for house building, how sparrow’s brains were incorporated into aphrodisiacal brews, and how extra money was made by mixing tea with dried elder leaves—and learn how courtship, marriage, sport, entertainment, education, and, occasionally, achievement briefly illuminated the drudgery. The Peasants’ Revolting Lives explores, commemorates, and celebrates the lives of those who endured against the odds. From medieval miseries to the idiosyncrasies of being a twenty-first-century peasant, tragedy and comedy sit side by side in these tales of survival in the face of hardship.
