Summary

This history details the tumultuous lives of Miami Beach’s mid-twentieth century jet set, and features archival photos. From roughly 1930 to 1960, Miami Beach attracted an exclusive colony of socialites, who mixed with Hollywood celebrities and dignitaries, such as Winston Churchill, as effortlessly as tonic mixes with gin. Elizabeth Taylor announced her ill-fated engagement to the son of a former ambassador in Miami Beach. Other movie stars, such as Veronica Lake, were filmed in the enclave. Beautiful model Bab Beckwith, the first Orange Bowl Parade queen, dated John F. Kennedy while he was in Miami in 1944. Speedboat king Gar Wood bought his mistress a $100,000 bayfront home and then sued to force her to vacate the property. A tumultuous affair between John Jacob Astor VI and Lucille Stiglich led to the young model serving time in the Miami Beach jail. Deborah C. Pollack delves into an era filled with excitement, style, humor and panache.

Learn to think like the great Chinese philosophers of old and swim with the flow of life, no longer against it.
The ancient Chinese sages were reported to have lived extremely long lives yet to have retained their youth, vigor, and a childlike humor well into their latter years. How? By discovering and aligning themselves with the underlying Intelligence of life.
In only 81 brief and truly non-denominational chapters you will discover how to do the same.
This is Dr. Barnes’ second translation of the Tao Te Ching, and it goes a bit deeper than his first. Still, he did his best to simplify the concepts so as to make them more digestible to the modern reader.

A fascinating account of the women who contributed to the Revolutionary War—both patriots and loyalists—at specific battles in the Carolinas.    Each of the Southern Revolutionary battlefields holds the history of soldiers and legends of women. From the wooded slopes of Kings Mountain to the fields of Cowpens, to the lesser-known sites like Fishing Creek and Hanging Rock, author Robert M. Dunkerly uncovers the stories and legends surrounding the women who were caught up in the struggle. This book serves not only as a study of the battles, but also as a chronicle of the experiences of women in the eighteenth century. Some were camp followers attached to the armies, while others were civilians caught in the line of fire. Women were present on nearly every battlefield, and their stories are told here for the first time.   Includes photos!

John Stuart Mill is regarded as one of the most influential thinkers of the Victorian Era. In this speech, he defends the practice of capital punishment. He states, “I defend this penalty, when confined to atrocious cases, on the very ground on which it is commonly attacked—on that of humanity to the criminal; as beyond comparison the least cruel mode in which it is possible adequately to deter from the crime.” Though written in the 1800s, Mill’s argument is still relevant in contemporary discussions of capital punishment.
