Pierre Bonnard was the leader of the group of post-impressionist painters who called themselves “the Nabis”, from the Hebrew word for “prophet”. Influenced by Odilon Redon, Puvis de Chavannes, popular imagery, and Japanese woodblock printing, Bonnard, Vuillard, Vallotton and Denis (to name the most prominent members) revolutionised the spirit of decorative technique during one of the richest periods in French painting.
Although the increasing individualism of their works often threatened to weaken their unity, the Nabis were above all a group of close friends. The artwork presented in this book − varying between Bonnard’s guilelessness, Vuillard’s ornamental and mysterious works, Denis’s soft languor and Vallotton’s almost bitter roughness − plunges us into the deep source of their creative talents.

Beginning with their introduction in the eleventh century, and ending with their widespread abandonment in the seventeenth, Marc Morris explores many of the country's most famous castles, as well as some spectacular lesser-known examples. At times this is an epic tale, driven by characters like William the Conqueror, King John, and Edward I, full of sieges and conquest on an awesome scale. But it is also by turns an intimate story of less eminent individuals, whose adventures, struggles, and ambitions were reflected in the fortified residences they constructed. Be it ever so grand or ever so humble, a castle was first and foremost a home.To understand castles-who built them, who lived in them, and why-is to understand the forces that shaped medieval Britain.

The story behind the eighteenth-century French Creole cottage now on the National Register of Historic Places, with illustrations included.   Magnolia Mound, situated on a ridge overlooking the meandering Mississippi River, stands as Baton Rouge’s most notable eighteenth-century structure. This volume, researched and written under the direction of the Magnolia Mound Board of Trustees, traces the origin and development of this splendid Creole raised cottage, providing an intimate look at plantation life and the economic system that supported it.   Beginning with the original land grant of 1786, the authors document both the social and the architectural history of the celebrated structure—from its origin as a modest settler’s house and farm to its later grandeur as a distinctive home situated within an extensive working plantation. The book also includes an account of the successful struggle by the Foundation for Historical Louisiana—which keeps the building and grounds open to the public—to save the house from destruction in 1960.Winner, Certificate of Commendation from the American Association for State and Local History

The American West has always provided larger than life characters, righting wrongs to make the world a better place and all set in a mythic landscape.

In ‘The Six-Shooter’ James Stewart starred as Britt Ponset, a drifting cowboy in the sunset years of the wild west. Episodes ranged from straight western drama to light and sentimental comedy. Stewart being one of the reigning stars of Hollywood at the time also brought his own touches to bear. His use of whispered narration during tense scenes created a heightened sense of drama and then relief when the situation was resolved.

The American West that radio, movies and TV portrayed is the stuff of legends; a fictional concoction usually far from the truth but ‘The Six-Shooter’ did something that few others radio shows could provide; entertainment that captivated the listener.
