May Sinclair was the nom de plume of Mary Amelia St. Clair (1863 – 1946), a British writer of novels, short stories and poetry and an active suffragette and spiritualist. "Where their Fire is not Quenched" is a highly unsettling and creepy story about an adulterous couple who are damned to continue their loathsome, loveless relationship for all eternity.

Henry might have conjured up if he'd only had the back of a business card to write upon. You'll find murder and suspense, horror and intrigue, love and betrayal, plus distant worlds and inner demons. All in a measly 55 words! Billboard magazine had this to say about The World’s Shortest Stories Vol. 1, “What is most impressive in this collection of great stories is the sheer variety. Let’s hope a second volume of these tiny gems will not be long in coming!”

Nancy Pearl selected Mothers & Other Monsters as a "Books for a Rainy Day" on Morning Edition on NPR.

In her luminous, long-awaited debut collection, award-winning novelist Maureen F. McHugh wryly and delicately examines the impacts of social and technological shifts on families. Using beautiful, deceptively simple prose, she illuminates the relationship between parents and children and the expected and unexpected chasms that open between generations.

    — A woman introduces her new lover to her late brother.
    — A teenager is interviewed about her peer group's attitudes toward sex and baby boomers.
    — A missing stepson sets a marriage on edge.
    — Anthropologists visiting an isolated outpost mission are threatened by nomadic raiders.

McHugh's characters—her Alzheimers-afflicted parents or her smart and rebellious teenagers—are always recognizable: stubborn, human, and heartbreakingly real.
