Summary

The story of a unique athlete’s remarkable journey—from riding his bike in the Ngong Hills of Kenya to the sport’s pinnacle, victory in the Tour de France. On 21 July 2013 Chris Froome made history as the second British cyclist to win the Tour de France—in the 100th edition of the world’s most famous bike race—and the first ever African-born rider to wear the coveted maillot jaune on the top step of the podium in Paris. Froome’s path into the elite ranks of road racing has been unlike any other in the annals of the sport. Born in Nairobi to British parents he was educated in South Africa and studied economics at university. But he abandoned his degree to take up the offer of a professional cycling contract in Europe. A fish out of water, Froome encountered a shock entrance into the rough and tumble world of top-level European bike racing. Incredibly, within two years—and despite his progress being severely hampered when he contracted a debilitating tropical disease—Froome had signed for the world’s biggest cycling team, British cycling supremo Sir Dave Brailsford’s Team Sky, finished second overall in the Vuelta a Espana, and sacrificed his own ambitions to help teammate Bradley Wiggins claim Britain’s first ever Tour de France title in 2012. At the turn of 2013 Froome superseded Wiggins as Sky’s team leader and went on to win four out of the five stage races he entered, including the prestigious Criterium du Dauphine, before dominating the 2013 Tour de France on a relentless pursuit of the ultimate prize in cycling.

A history of the American horse that won Britain’s greatest race and changed the Thoroughbred racing world.

A quarter of a million people braved miserable conditions at Epsom Downs on June 2, 1954, to see the 175th running of the prestigious Derby Stakes. Queen Elizabeth II and Sir Winston Churchill were in attendance, along with thousands of Britons who were all convinced of the unfailing superiority of English bloodstock and eager to see a British colt take the victory. They were shocked when a Kentucky-born chestnut named Never Say Die galloped to a two-length triumph at odds of 33–1, winning Britain’s greatest race and beginning an important shift in the world of Thoroughbred racing.

Never Say Die traces the history of this extraordinary colt, beginning with his foaling in Lexington, Kentucky, as well as the stories of the influential individuals brought together by the horse and his victory?from the heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune to the Aga Khan. Most fascinating is the tale of Mona Best of Liverpool, England, whose well-placed bet on the long-shot Derby contender allowed her to open the Casbah Coffee Club. There, her son met musicians John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison, later joining their band.

Featuring a foreword by the original drummer for the Beatles, Pete Best, this remarkable book reveals how an underdog’s surprise victory played a part in the formation of the most successful and influential rock band in history and made the Bluegrass region of Kentucky the center of the international Thoroughbred industry.

    Praise for Never Say Die

“Nicholson has done a very fine job of placing the unique role of Never Say Die in perspective within the specific confines of Thoroughbred racing history, while at the same time explaining how this horse was touched by a vivid array of characters in other social and historical contexts. Who would have imagined that a racehorse would link such diverse institutions as the Singer sewing machine company, the Epsom Derby, and the Beatles?” —Edward L. Bowen, author of The Lucky Thirteen

“As a reader, I was left with a clear understanding of how the breeding industry has gone global, and importantly, how it will always follow the money. Racing enthusiasts will enjoy how the author sews together this unusual patchwork of characters into a narrative.” —John Eisenberg, author of The Great Match Race: When North Met South in America’s First Sports Spectacle

“[E]nlightening and entertaining. . .Nicholson’s tale of close connections and global links is a yarn worth following.” —Wall Street Journal

    Great Himalaya Trail - 1700...

The Great Himalaya Trail is one of the longest and highest trails in the world. It is a trail that winds for 1,700 kilometres through Nepal — across the 'roof of the world', over ice-covered passes, crossing high-mountain deserts and through some of the most remote areas on earth. This path is perhaps the ultimate walk. In 2012, Himalaya veteran Gerda Pauler set out to walk the length of the trail to raise awareness of autism in Nepal. Travelling across the country with open eyes and ears, ascending high passes, visiting isolated villages and drinking tea with the locals allowed her to see and hear things many of us might never hear, never experience — and never know. Beautifully written like many great travel books and with a foreword by Sir Chris Bonington, this is so much more than a travel diary — it is a collection of stories from the very heart of Nepal and its people. From Tibetan tea and local beer to corrupt politicians and child marriage; cold nights and monsoon rain to incredible views and searing heat; and from angry yaks and giant spiders to Mr Bean and Jack Nicholson… 'Her book is not about her, but about this trip, across the roof of the world, done both for her own pleasure and for those who suffer from autism.' Sir Chris Bonington

Jeff Van Gundy. Brad Stevens. Frank Vogel. Mike Budenholzer. Tom Thibodeau. Sam Presti. Leon Rose. Before you knew his name, before he guided your team to a championship, he had a playing career of his own at an NCAA Division III college. He didn't play for fortune—the NBA was out of reach, and his school didn't even give athletic scholarships. He didn't play for fame—his games weren't televised, and the stands were rarely full. Whatever the motivation, he simply couldn't give up the game of basketball. And that didn't change after graduation, when it was time to pick a career path. For the first time in league history, NBA coaches and general managers are just as likely to have played Division III basketball as they are to have played in the NBA. While the number of former D3 players working in the NBA is higher than ever, small college alums have served in leadership positions since the league's founding. They shaped the NBA into what it is today, playing integral roles in the Lakers' initial success in LA, the inception of several expansion franchises, the creation of the popular All-Star Weekend dunk contest, and the globalization of the league. Their improbable and inspiring journeys tell a bigger story—the history of small college athletics, the evolution of coaching and management in the NBA, and the hiring practices in the most competitive fields.
