Summary

______________________
A fascinating examination of cricket in the nineteenth century by 'the most entertaining historian alive' (Spectator)

'Few historians have the power to make you feel you actually inhabit the times they are writing about. Kynaston does' Sunday Times, Books of the Decade

On a hot morning in July 1898, the sporting world gathered at Lord's to celebrate the fiftieth birthday of WG Grace, the greatest cricketer the game has ever seen. Grace was cheered onto the field by a packed crowd as he captained the Gentlemen, the privileged old guard of the Establishment. Their opponents in this annual match were the Players, cricketers for whom the sport was a precarious livelihood rather than a summer pastime. This three-day encounter represented the climax of cricket's Golden Age, and the unstoppable arrival of the professional game that would dominate the twentieth century.

In WG's Birthday Party, David Kynaston tells the story of one of the most thrilling matches in cricketing history, as well as the colourful and sometimes tragically moving lives of the members of both teams. Using the Gentlemen vs Players contest as a lens through which to examine the hierarchy and tensions endemic in cricket at the beginning of the modern era, he presents a lively, moving, richly detailed and massively entertaining portrait of late-Victorian society. It is social history at its most compelling, from 'the most entertaining historian alive'.

From Here to There is a book about the path to mastery.
How do you move from one place to another without the inevitable anxiety, stress, confusion, and misdirection that we’ve all had to face? This book lays out a big-picture perspective on the ways we can think about these periods in life, that best set us up for success, and best prepare us to tackle the inherent obstacles any journey possesses. From Commitment, to Learning, to Discernment, to Systems, to Momentum, and more, Thane works through the mental models that have empowered him to think clearly and accurately about this time in life.
For those people who care less about the idea and more about the “how to”, this book has you covered. For each broad idea, Thane dives into the smaller specifics on what these concepts look like in application. With lists, tips, and strategies, this book will leave you with a full arsenal of tools to situationally apply to anything life may throw your way.
Whether you’re a hard-charger, or a deep-thinker, or a loyal employee, this book will be useful for you. It’s engaging, inspiring, but more importantly it’s grounding. This book is relatable because life is a struggle, and the life experiences Thane shares speak to the reality that, more times than not, we will fail. But, in failing there’s learning. And in learning there’s growth.
"Come with me on this journey of growth, From Here to There."

What does it feel like to be jacked?
I can tell you in a single word: it feels incredible.
Being very strong and taking up a lot of physical space changes the entire way you feel about yourself and the way that others perceive you as well. Suddenly, you become a physical presence and people can’t help but sit up and take notice. You become indomitable, immovable and powerful and as a result, everything you say has more weight and more gravity to it.
    People listen.
Bulking changes other things too. When you feel that powerful and you notice the way people start treating you, you can’t help but feel far more confident too. This changes the way you walk, the way you hold yourself and the way that you present yourself. You walk like someone unstoppable and that only increases that sense of presence.
And then there are all the direct and practical ways that gaining muscle changes your life. You start to win play fights with your mates, you become better at sports and people start asking you to help them lift things.
You know, it’s just a great feeling to be thought of as someone capable and powerful – instead of being the little guy who is the butt of jokes all the time!
And being jacked also helps you to get attention from the opposite sex. You look amazing in all your clothes – you can fill out a suit and your arms pop from white vests – and all that power and confidence is simply highly attractive to people.
You’ll even find that you start getting your way more in work and in the rest of your life, as people start to take you more seriously. That, and physical prowess correlates with improved brain power, you can expect to start thinking better too!
But maybe you’re not bothered about all that. Maybe you’re simply looking for a way to bulk up so you can become stronger and better at your sport. Perhaps you’re a bodybuilder?
