Summary

Find out what it’s like to have “the best job in town”

Dave Perkins was once told by a bluntly helpful university admissions officer: “You don’t have the looks for TV or the voice for radio. You should go into print.” Which he did, first at the Globe and Mail, and then for 36 well-travelled years at the Toronto Star.

In Fun and Games, Perkins recounts hysterical, revealing, and sometimes embarrassing personal stories from almost every sport and many major championships. After 40 years of encountering a myriad of athletes, fans, team managers, and owners, Perkins offers unique observations on the Blue Jays and Raptors, 58 major championships’ worth of golf, 10 Olympic Games, football, hockey, boxing, horse racing, and more.

Learn why Tiger Woods asked Perkins if he was nuts, why he detected Forrest Gump in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and why Super Bowl week is the worst week of the year. Perkins exposes the mistakes he made in both thought and word — once, when intending to type “the shot ran down the goalie’s leg,” he used an “i” instead of an “o” — and to this day, he has never found a sacred cow that didn’t deserve a barbecue.

Sir Chris Bonnington. " Success on all the seven summits is a feat in itself, made all the more remarkable by the fact thay wre all summited at their first attempt. However, Alistair's hardest climb is his recovery from a near fatal brain haemmorhage. All of the survival skills that a climber uses every day in the mountains have, undoubtedly, helped prepare Alistair for this, his greatest challenge." On the 1st February 2010 Alistair Sutcliffe suffered a massive brain haemorrhage. The doctors told his wife to say her last goodbyes as he wouldn't survive the night. He did. In this remarkable story Alistair recounts how he became the first man to summit the highest mountain on each of the seven continents at the first attempt. He has endured the harshest climates, been held at gunpoint, seen climbers fall to their deaths and stood on top of the world, but his hardest climb started on the 2nd February 2010, the morning after his brain haemorrhage.

My Secret Life, the anonymously written erotic memoirs of a Victorian English gentleman who refers to himself simply as 'Walter' is one of the most idiosyncratic and sexually obsessed books ever written. In this vast autobiographical confessional the author recounts, in meticulous detail, his sexual exploits throughout the course of a life devoted entirely to the pursuit of carnal pleasure. Through this compelling exploration of the author's sexual behaviour we are left with a uniquely entertaining insight into life behind the closed doors of Victorian society. My Secret Life is evocative, provocative, sorrowful, suspenseful, obscene, exciting and highly erotic...in it we are privy to the thoughts, emotions and memories of one of the most unusual, unsung and colourful English eccentrics of the Victorian era. Now, for the first time, the complete unabridged version of this unique text is being narrated and scored by film composer Dominic Crawford Collins as an 'audiofilm' (an audiobook in which the emotional landscape is explored through the music score). Each chapter of My Secret Life will be released at monthly intervals over the next ten or so years culminating in what is likely to become the longest audio book ever to be produced.
