Synopsis

Dante Alighieri's "The Vision of Hell"—more commonly known as the first part of "The Divine Comedy"—is an unparalleled exploration of the moral landscape of the human soul. Through rich, allegorical verses and vivid imagery, Dante guides readers through the nine circles of Hell, each representing different sins and their consequential everlasting punishments. Written in the early 14th century during a pivotal time of philosophical and theological inquiry, this seminal work employs the terza rima rhyme scheme, a hallmark of Dante's innovative literary style, weaving together personal experience with profound moral and spiritual contemplation. Dante's background as a poet, politician, and philosopher in Florence profoundly influenced his writing. His exile from Florence ignited a deep reflection on justice, redemption, and the human condition, themes that permeate "The Vision of Hell." The text serves as a cautionary tale infused with Dante's unique merging of classical mythology and Christian theology, ultimately seeking to illuminate the path to personal and societal morality amidst the tumult of his era. Readers are wholeheartedly encouraged to delve into "The Vision of Hell" not only as a foundational work of Italian literature but as an enduring examination of ethical dilemmas still relevant today. Dante's masterful narrative invites reflection on the nature of sin, justice, and redemption, making it essential reading for those seeking a deeper understanding of the human experience.

The author of the award-winning national bestseller I Done Clicked My Heels Three Times returns with a poetry collection that transforms the Black female speaker from object, artistic muse, and victim to subject, critic, and master of her story

Resting Bitch Face is a book for women, for Black women, for lovers of art and film criticism, and for writers interested in work that finds a middle ground between poetry and prose. Taylor Byas uses some of our most common ways of "watching" throughout history (painting, films, sculpture, and photographs) to explore how these mediums shape Black female subjectivity.

From the examination of artwork by Picasso, Gauguin, Sally Mann, and Nan Goldin, Byas displays her mastery of the poetic form by engaging in intimate and inventive writing. Fluctuating between watcher and watched, the speaker of these poems uses mirrors and reflections to flip the script and talk back to histories of art, text, photography, relationships, and men. From Polaroids to gesso primer to sculpture, Byas creates a world in which the artist calls out and the muse responds. For not only does she enter the world of the long-revered classic artist, but she also infuses her poems with such iconic pop culture works as The Joker, WandaVision, and Last Tango in Paris.

'And you have fixed my life – however short. You did not light me: I was always a mad comet; but you have fixed me. I spun round you a satellite for a month, but I shall swing out soon, a dark star in the orbit where you will blaze.'

A deeply powerful poetry collection that lays bare both the horrors and humanity of the First World War, told with unflinching honesty and profound beauty by one of the greatest war poets in history: Wildfred Owen.
Wilfred Owen: The Selected Poems brings together the most searing and unforgettable works of the poet whose voice has come to define the tragedy of World War I. Writing from the trenches, Owen crafts poems that confront the violence, fear and tragic waste of war while elevating the humanity of those caught within it. His mastery of imagery and sound – whether in the bitter irony of 'Dulce et Decorum Est', the haunting tenderness of 'Anthem for Doomed Youth', or the bleak beauty of 'Exposure' – transforms personal and collective suffering into timeless art. This collection not only preserves the anguish of a generation lost to conflict, but also continues to speak across time about the costs of war, the fragility of life and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
Wilfred Owen (1893 – 1918) was one of the most famous English poets writing during the First World War. A second lieutenant in the Manchester Regiment, Owen endured several traumatic experiences throughout his time in service, much of which was the inspiration for his writing. Owen was killed in action at just twenty-five years old, but his poetry depicting the horrors of warfare remain widely read to this day.

Varied in subject matter, these poems are clearly in the control of a singular voice. There is wonderful use of imagery throughout and surprising metaphor in abundance, in gentle and inventive poems that explores ideas of love, home, family and loss.– Hannah Lowe
