As he continued on his journey to the ranch, Rex kicked himself for feeling this way. He felt a little ashamed at having felt so horny the night before. The last thing he wanted was to have a tryst with the boss’s son. And despite the tragedy, Clay was still fundamentally the same person he always was - a swinging bachelor with a taste for multiple women…and men. Nothing would change that. In a couple of days after putting Whisky down, Clay would probably be back to his usual philandering ways, and everything would go back to normal.
But still, even though he refused to admit it to himself, part of him was disappointed that Clay hadn’t tried to make a move the night before. Lying in his arms, staring at the roof of the stables while time whizzed by, they shared a moment, and there was a tenderness in that moment that Clay hadn’t felt for a long, long time. Throughout the night as they lay together side by side, Rex wondered whether Clay felt the same way. But then Clay left. Just like how Chuck did.
Rex arrived, early as usual, despite not having gotten much sleep the night before. Looking around the stables, there was a conspicuous absence - Whisky wasn’t there. Oh no. Clay! It had barely been a couple of hours since he was there last night. He ran out of the stables, looking around for Clay. The vast expanse of the estate swirled around him but he couldn’t see Clay anywhere.
As he paced forward frantically, a lone shot rang out, the reverberation ringing out in the open air. It had come from the back of the stables. Rex started walking in the direction of the shot, but stopped after a few steps. Standing there outside the entrance, he knew it was all over.
Before long, Clay appeared, his face white as a ghost. The nozzle of his shotgun trailed against the ground as he dragged it lifelessly behind him. Rex hadn’t expected him to put down Whisky himself. Clay barely acknowledged him, mumbling to himself as he walked past Rex towards the direction of the main house.
It was all over.
