Students will need another 2–3 hours of outside practice and review for every hour of class time using the materials in the Continuing Mandarin Chinese Workbook that accompanies this textbook. These books can also be used by self-study learners due to the extensive explanations and free supplementary materials available including online audio and video recordings and flash cards. The entire course can be completed in 25 to 35 weeks and teaches you the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing Mandarin Chinese at a conversational level. Each lesson starts with a dialogue and includes a list of new and supplementary vocabulary along with questions and grammar notes about the dialogue, a reading section and extensive exercises (that are in the Workbook).Continuing Mandarin Chinese Textbook offers the following significant advantages over other similar textbooks:Everyday Chinese dialogues are used for listening and practice — complete with vocabulary lists and questions and storylines based on actual everyday experiences in ChinaChinese grammar is explained in simple, non-technical terms with useful notes and tips givenReading exercises are provided for all new words and phrases in each lessonFree online audio recordings by native speakers from various parts of China help you not only acquire correct pronunciation but also to understand Chinese speakers who have different accentsIllustrations and supplementary video clips add authenticity to the dialogues in the bookA Chinese-English dictionary is provided at the back for easy referenceChinese characters and Pinyin Romanized forms are used throughout the book except for the reading exercises—so this book is usable by learners who wish to focus on learning the spoken language and do not necessarily want to learn to read and write Chinese. This textbook should be used with the accompanying Continuing Mandarin Chinese Workbook and with the accompanying audio files, which can be downloaded free directly from the Tuttle website.

The ultimate insider's guide to Los Angeles
Features interesting and unusual places not found in traditional travel guides
"In Los Angeles, everyone is a star." — Denzel Washington
For more than a century, seekers of sun and celebrity from around the world have flocked to this sprawling metropolis on the Pacific, which Dorothy Parker once described as "72 suburbs in search of a city." But beyond the red-carpet reputation and Tinseltown trappings is a west coast wonderland teeming with unexpected cultural experiences, iconic architecture, gorgeous open spaces, quirky museums, hidden vistas, unconventional art, and obscure stories about the starlets, moguls, personalities, and players who have made Los Angeles their playground. This unusual guidebook explores 111 of the city's most interesting and unknown places and experiences: wander a serpentine path in a spiritual quest of your own making; channel your inner cowboy at a tried and true honky tonk bar; pay homage to the Dude at the bungalow where the big Lebowski lived; turn your car tires into musical instruments on the country's only "musical" road; sleep with the ghosts of Marilyn Monroe and Charlie Chaplin; view a constellation of stars more vivid than anything Hollywood Boulevard has to offer. From the San Gabriel Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, Angelenos and vistors will fall in love with the real Los Angeles. Adventures beckon. Surprises await. Just imagine how much more scintillating your dinner-party storytelling will be…
»In Los Angeles, everyone is a star.« – Denzel Washington
Seit mehr als einem Jahrhundert strömen Menschen auf der Suche nach Sonne und Prominenz in die riesige Metropole am Pazifik. Doch findet sich hinter dem ganzen Glamour ein unerwartetes Wunderland, in dem es von beeindruckender Architektur, hinreißenden Parks, schrulligen Museen, versteckten Aussichtspunkten, unkonventioneller Kunst und unbekannten Geschichten über Starlets, Filmmogule und Playboys nur so wimmelt.

Vegetarian recipes from a food blogger with “a talent for enticing and boldly flavored creations, in recipes that are colorful, thoughtful, and fresh” (Heidi Swanson, New York Times–bestselling author of Super Natural Cooking).

In Herbivoracious: A Vegetarian Cookbook for People Who Love to Eat, food blogger Michael Natkin offers up 150 exciting recipes (most of which have not appeared on his blog) notable both for their big, bold, bright flavors and for their beautiful looks on the plate, the latter apparent in more than 80 four-color photos that grace the book. An indefatigable explorer of global cuisines, with particular interests in the Mediterranean and the Middle East and in East and Southeast Asia, Natkin has crafted, through years of experimenting in his kitchen and in loads of intensive give-and-take with his blog readers, dishes that truly are revelations in taste, texture, aroma, and presentation. You’ll find hearty main courses, ranging from a robust Caribbean Lentil-Stuffed Flatbread across the Atlantic to a comforting Sicilian Spaghetti with Pan-Roasted Cauliflower and around the Cape of Good Hope to a delectable Sichuan Dry-Fried Green Beans and Tofu. An abundance of soups, salads, sauces and condiments, sides, appetizers and small plates, desserts, and breakfasts round out the recipes. Natkin, a vegetarian himself, provides advice on how to craft vegetarian meals that amply deliver protein and other nutrients, and the imaginative menus he presents deliver balanced and complementary flavors, in surprising and utterly pleasing ways. The many dozens of vegan and gluten-free recipes are clearly noted, too, and an introductory chapter lays out the simple steps readers can take to outfit a globally inspired pantry of seasonings and sauces that make meatless food come alive.

    Shepherd’s Sight - A Farming Life

A restorative and resonant memoir of a year in the life of an aging shepherd

For 50 years, Barbara McLean has tended a flock of Border Leicester sheep on her small Ontario farm, Lambsquarters. In Shepherd’s Sight she shares the crises, pleasures, and challenges of farm life over the course of a year. Now in her 70s, McLean faces a new problem: how much longer she can continue with the physically taxing work that is her central source of meaning and satisfaction.

Through her unsentimental gaze, we witness the highs and heartbreaks of delivering and rearing lambs, the shearing and spinning of wool, the wildlife in the woods (and occasionally in the house), and the garden produce moving from seed to harvest to table. Even after half a century on this land, McLean is still making fresh observations, and she shares them in evocative, elegant prose. As she moves through the calendar year, she also reflects on years past, offering a long view on climate, stewardship, and agriculture.

With its vivid description and absorbing storytelling, Shepherd’s Sight offers an unforgettable glimpse of a life lived on the land.
