Summary

A riotously funny saga of institutional insanity, based on the author’s association with the notorious psychiatrist R. D. LaingDespite massive literary success, Sidney Bell feels perpetually unsatisfied and suffers unexplained physical ailments. Desperate to straighten out his twisted life, anxiety-ridden Sid seeks help from experimental psychiatrist Dr. Willie Last, whose therapeutic methods involve hallucinatory drugs such as LSD and trading places with his patients. After a tumultuous first trip, Sid ends up at Conolly House, a radical hospital for young schizophrenics where he serves as a “barefoot doctor.” From there, Sigal launches readers on a sardonic, rambling journey through a fantastic breed of insanity. With his freewheeling, ecstatic prose, Sigal spins a manic psychological quest into a telling portrait of a society in the grips of a turbulent decade. An ex–talk show host, her cheating husband, and a plot to canonize a friend’s Nicaraguan aunt make for “pure, unadulterated adulterous entertainment” (The New York Times). Lapsed Catholic Alice Fairweather is searching for meaning. Having lost her ideal job as a radio talk show host who interprets dreams, hopelessly in love with a husband who loves too many other women, and stuck in upstate New York with her sons and dogs, one of whom is ill, her life isn’t exactly what she envisioned as a young girl. So when Abelardo, her husband’s former roommate, comes to visit on a quest to make his aunt the first Nicaraguan saint, it feels like a sign.   Suddenly, Alice finds herself on a madcap mission to canonize a woman she’s never met, becoming intimately acquainted with the history of female sainthood, striking up an odd friendship with the eccentric head of New York’s hagiography club, and traveling to Nicaragua on a last-minute flight.   Equal parts moving and hilarious, Absent a Miracle is a quirky and sharp look at love, loss, identity, faith, marriage, and—of course—sainthood.

Capturing the anxious, self-aware mood of young college grads in the aughts, Private Citizens embraces the contradictions of our new century: call it a loving satire. A gleefully rude comedy of manners. The story’s four whip-smart narrators-idealistic Cory, Internet-lurking Will, awkward Henrik, and vicious Linda—are torn between fixing the world and cannibalizing it. In boisterous prose that ricochets between humor and pain, the four estranged friends stagger through the Bay Area's maze of tech startups, protestors, gentrifiers, karaoke bars, house parties, and cultish self-help seminars, washing up in each other's lives once again.

Experience a year in the life of a cranky couch potato—also known as “the funniest writer in America” (The Wall Street Journal).   Touching on topics from technological change to the United Nations, this is a chronicle of the day-to-day home life and frequent harangues of a New York Times–bestselling humorist. Over the course of the year, in between rants, he does occasionally leave the sofa and embark on exotic adventures—including a blind (drunk) wine tasting with Christopher Buckley, and a Motel 6 where he has twenty-eight channels and a bathroom to himself. As readers of Parliament of Whores, Give War a Chance, and his other bestsellers know, P. J. O’Rourke takes no prisoners—though he may take a few naps.   “An entertaining and engaging read.” —Associated Press   “A wide-angled worldview from his own living room, his salon of sarcasm. He introduces readers to his assistant, friends, family and smart-aleck babysitter . . . His vitriolic wit is couched in humor that elicits the gamut from giggles to guffaws.” —Publishers Weekly
