Summary

Regional bird field guides are few and far between in South Australia and Chris Baxter's photographic guide to the birds of Kangaroo Island is the stand-out in this genre. This comprehensive account covers all 267 bird species recorded on the Island or offshore over the seas. It builds on the annotated list produced by the same author in 1989 and revised in 1995. The photographs provided by some of Australia's most highly regarded photographers beautifully illustrate the detailed descriptions of the birds, their habits, habitats, breeding, status, abundance and distribution on the Island. In addition there are recommendations on where to look for each species, with cautions about not getting too close to endangered birds and their nests. Chris Baxter has called on a lifetime of bird watching on Kangaroo Island and observations from visitors and residents to present an attractive field guide that is a must for all birdwatchers from casual observers to serious ornithologists.

At times humorous and at times terrifying, these unusual case studies of seemingly unbelievable injuries and illnesses have one thing in common: they are all entirely true. Dr. Rob Myers' firsthand medical knowledge allows him to see past thin excuses to uncover the outrageously dangerous conditions that people have gotten themselves into. Pool balls and uncooked spaghetti are removed from locations where they never should have been placed, a drunken crew of neighbors tries to use a lawnmower to trim their hedges with disastrous results, and a high school football player gets into a fight with a vending machine that stole his dollar — no scenario is too strange to appear in this volume of medical maladies.

This well-researched and highly critical examination of the state of our mental health system by the industry's most relentless critic presents a new and controversial explanation as to why—in spite of spending $147 billion annually—140,000 seriously mentally ill are homeless, 390,000 are incarcerated, and even educated, tenacious, and caring people can't get treatment for their mentally ill loved ones. DJ Jaffe blames the mental health industry and the government for shunning the 10 million adults who are the most seriously mentally ill—mainly those who suffer from schizophrenia and severe bipolar disorder—and, instead, working to improve "mental wellness" in 43 million others, many of whom are barely symptomatic. Using industry and government documents, scientific journals, and anecdotes from his thirty years of advocacy, Jaffe documents the insane consequences of these industry-driven policies: psychiatric hospitals for the seriously ill are still being closed; involuntary commitment criteria are being narrowed to the point where laws now require violence rather than prevent it; the public is endangered; and the mentally ill and their families are forced to suffer.

You surely have heard of it if you are a teacher, a student or even a parent, especially after the period of adoption of social exclusion measures worldwide. But excluding this particular period, Google Classroom is a big step forward in an increasingly digital era, to save time, effort and money, things like long and expensive car trips to college, transfers leaving your home for a long time and in terms of ecology, save a lot of paper and why not pollution. Ball Lightning is a phenomena which definitely exists. One European study counted over 5,000 sightings of these weird balls. It also seems to be similar to old tales of the “Will O the Wisp” and World War Two Foo Fighters.St. Elmos Fire also has similar observations so data on this phenomenon are included too. There are many potential explanations but none are confirmed. Although most seem to appear around thunderstorms this is not always the case.My own belief is that these objects are controlled by some type of intelligence and we will discuss reasons for this later in the book.In this book you will read a lot of background information and sightings stories by persons for the last hundreds of years. This is just another mystery in our strange world which cries out for more investigation.
