Summary

Poetry is a fascinating use of language. With almost a million words at its command it is not surprising that these Isles have produced some of the most beautiful, moving and descriptive verse through the centuries. In this series we look at each calendar month through the eyes and minds of our most gifted poets to bring you a guide to the days within each. This volume of Poetry is all about April - the fourth month of the year in our Gregorian calendar heralding Spring in earnest and of course April Showers and perhaps other unsettled weather. For our poets including Wilfred Owen, Thomas Hardy, Robert Louis Stevenson, Henry Alford, Robert Browning, Henry Van Dyke, Percy Byssche Shelley and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow the month provides a rich source for them to muse upon. Many of the poems are also available as an audiobook from our sister company Portable Poetry. Many samples are at our youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/PortablePoetry?feature=mhee The full volume can be purchased from iTunes, Amazon and other digital stores. Among the readers are Richard Mitchley and Ghizela Rowe
Available since: 09/24/2013.

This National Book Award–winning volume presents nearly forty years of the renowned poet’s work. Between 1965 and 2003, Jean Valentine published nine critically acclaimed collections of poetry, including Dream Barker(winner of the Yale Younger Poets Award), Ordinary Things, and The River at Wolf. Spare and intensely-felt, Valentine’s poems present experience as only imperfectly graspable. This volume gathers together all of Valentine's published poems, presenting them alongside a stunning new collection. Valentine’s poetry is as recognizable as the slant truth of a dream. She is a brave, unshirking poet who speaks with fire on the great subjects―love, and death, and the soul. Her images―strange, canny visions of the unknown self―clang with the authenticity of real experience. This is an urgent art that wants to heal what it touches, a poetry that wants to tell, intimately, the whole life.

These two great poems date from Shakespeare’s early years and are full of passion and invention. In Venus and Adonis, the goddess of love pleads with the beautiful boy to submit to her advances and become her love – but he only wants to hunt boar. In the more serious Rape of Lucrece, Shakespeare draws on the Roman take of the Emperor Tarquin’s desire for Lucrece and its tragic consequencies. These poems give prominent parts to the two heroines, and Clare Corbett and Eve Best shine.

Each poem in this book contains a deep sense of life. The poet has shown the light of hope in the midst of despair and pain. Realized God's true nature afresh. Shown a consciousness about the world. The world of fantasy in this book is mixed with reality. A wonderful amalgamation of spiritual and scientific knowledge. The poet asks various questions about social consciousness, religion and politics.

Nature has dazzled with her work in seasons past and now begins to sculpt with light and colour in yet another masterclass. The landscape can now run from stormy grey to blizzard white and all manner in between. Temperatures drop and the change is dramatic, bleak, but beautiful in its own wonder.

Here, each and every day is celebrated with distinct and separate verse; Some poems commemorate the day it was written, others the birth or death of the writer or a particular significant moment that engages poet with date and verse.

Once more our classic poets describe the unfolding days…..
