Summary

The inspiration for the film starring Dev Patel: A sprawling masterpiece about a boy making his way to manhood in nineteenth-century England.   David Copperfield’s father died before he was born, but he grew up loved and comfortable—until he turned seven and his mother married Edward Murdstone. His new stepfather could not banish little Davy fast enough, sending him to live with the housekeeper, Peggotty, and her fisherman brother.   Murdstone growing ever more tyrannical, David’s next stop is boarding school, and there he learns of the death of his mother and her new baby. David must now find his own place in the world. His journey will take him to many places and introduce him to many people, friends and enemies alike, before he is really able to learn from his experiences and find his true heart.   Set against the backdrop of Victorian-era England, this semiautobiographical coming-of-age story is filled with humor, emotion, and insightful social commentary.

Lloyd Boyd is taking a shower when God calls on him to become a personal preacher, but the under-achieving Lloyd is not entirely sure what that entails. After he drops off business cards at his local grocery store, bus stop, and gas station, he starts getting calls! Soon, Lloyd is inundated with requests, including one from Selma, who wants her husband to rediscover faith, and Miss Minerva and Miss Flossie, who are tempted to sell their church for $5 million. Though he has doubts about his call from God, Lloyd stumbles and bumbles through his new role as a personal preacher, and his unconventional style somehow manages to get through to people who were convinced all hope was lost. A comedy about keeping the faith, I Flunked Sunday School reminds you that God does indeed have a plan for everyone's lives, even Lloyd Boyd's.

A possibly fictionalised account by the comic novelist Jerome K. Jerome of a trip to Germany that he undertook with a friend in order to see the famous Passion Play at Oberammergau. The journey takes in London, Dover, Ostend, Cologne, Munich, Oberau, Oberammergau and then back to London via Heidelberg. As one might expect from the author of 'Three Men in a Boat', much goes wrong along the way, including seasickness, strange food, stranger beds, misleading guidebooks, bewildering train timetables, and numerous cultural and linguistic misunderstandings. In this delightful memoir by the authors of Cheaper by the Dozen, the twelve Gilbreth children cope with the loss of their father as they grow up together. With twelve kids, life at the Gilbreth house has always been a big project. But after their father passes away, there are more challenges than ever. And yet, with the irrepressible blend of humor and good cheer characteristic of one of the most beloved families in America, the Gilbreths happily rise to every occasion and find a way to keep it all together.   With the clan struggling to make ends meet, everyone has to pitch in. As their resourceful mother works to keep the family business running without Dad, the kids tackle the adventures of raising themselves and running a household. Their attempts to pinch pennies frequently result in chaos. From tragedy and the trials of the first year as a single-parent household to the daily crises of a family with a double-digit headcount, the episodes in Belles on Their Toes are poignant, inspiring, and hilarious.   “From start to finish, it is a reading joy,” raved the Chicago Sunday Tribune. “There is a sincere and heartwarming atmosphere in this second volume,” wrote Library Journal, “that makes it almost better reading, if possible, than the first.”  This ebook features an illustrated biography including rare photos from the authors’ estates.

Sex Instructions for Farmers is a light-hearted guide to finding and keeping

    love
for that stalwart of the Irish rural community – the bachelor farmer. This man, while a prince behind his plough, who can freely discuss international problems, wilts before the female form. First published in 1980, chapters include sage advice on how to 'prepare the soil', how to sow the seeds of a fruitful relationship and how to reap the bounty from his labours.

Filled with pearls of wisdom, such as 'bottom pinching is unsporting' and 'the practice of changing one's socks once a month will in future be regarded as insufficient', this humorous piece of nostalgia may still prove useful to some modern men!
