Summary

The acclaimed author of Blue Desert explores life on the arid borderlands of southern Arizona in this “compelling and wonderfully poetic” essay collection (Ron Hansen, New York Times Book Review).

In Desierto, Charles Bowden brings his signature eye for vivid detail and penetrating insight to the Sonoran Desert. Travelling across this unforgiving terrain, he explores struggling desert villages, bitter Indian feuds, and a rich history that transcends borders. He profiles notorious predators from mountain lions to drug lords and land barons. Through it all, Bowden offers prescient visions of a future in which the region’s age-old dramas replay themselves long into the future.

“In these powerful epic tales of the Sonora Desert, Bowden peoples the harsh land on both sides of the US-Mexican border with saints and sinners, but his enduring hero is the desert itself.” —Kirkus Reviews

This “excellent” popular science book explores just what we—and the things around us—are made of (Aftenposten, Norway).

Some elements get all the attention: glittering gold, radioactive uranium—materials we call “precious” because they are so rare. But what could be more precious than the building blocks of life—from the oxygen in our air to the carbon in all living things?

In The Elements We Live By, physicist and award-winning author Anja Røyne reminds us that we’d be lost without the quiet heroes of the periodic table. Our bodies need phosphorous to hold our DNA together, potassium to power our optic nerves, and many more elements—in just the right amounts—to function. Other fundamental elements keep our technology (and society) running: Our phones contain arsenic, boron, and gallium to control signals and store information; indium and tin for the touch screen; and lithium for the battery.

Everything is made of elements—every galaxy, star, and planet—from the iron in Earth’s core to the silicon in its sand. But that doesn’t mean the elements we rely on will never run out; for example, about half the lithium we need is extracted from rocks in Australia, and the other half is from saltwater in Argentina and Chile. As Røyne travels the world to find where these elements exist (some in ever-shrinking amounts), she shows how vitally urgent it is for us to protect them—the elements of our very existence.

“Not just a discussion of basic chemistry, this is a volume that looks at the human impact on the planet and what we can learn from nature…Useful for science or sociology courses that address the various impacts of natural resource development or for popular science readers.” —School Library Journal

The New York Times bestseller that makes scientific subjects both understandable and fun: “Every sentence sparkles with wit and charm.” —Richard Dawkins   From the Pulitzer Prize–winning New York Times science journalist and bestselling author of Woman, this is a playful, passionate guide to the science all around us (and inside us)—from physics to chemistry, biology, geology, astronomy, and more.   Drawing on conversations with hundreds of the world’s top scientists, Natalie Angier creates a thoroughly entertaining guide to scientific literacy. For those who want a fuller understanding of some of the great issues of our time, The Canon offers insights on stem cells, bird flu, evolution, and global warming. For students—or parents whose kids ask a lot of questions about how the world works—it brings to life such topics as how the earth was formed, or what electricity is. Also included are clear, fascinating explanations of how to think scientifically and grasp the tricky subject of probability.  The Canon is a joyride through the major scientific disciplines that reignites our childhood delight and sense of wonder—and along the way, tells us what is actually happening when our ice cream melts or our coffee gets cold, what our liver cells do when we eat a caramel, why the horse is an example of evolution at work, and how we’re all really made of stardust.

String theory corresponds to a theoretical (As the name implies) framework introduced in physics. This framework share similarities with particle physics, as it presents point like particles (from particle physics) as one-dimensional objects, these objects are said to be string. They are stored in the framework described above. String theory describes the behavior of these strings through space. It also determines how these strings interact with each other. It a string is observed on a larger scale than standard string scale, it may look very similar to any ordinary particle. The particle that is being observed will hold mass, charge and other string properties that are determined according t their vibrational state. Graviton is corresponded by one of many vibrational states of string theory. Graviton is simply said to be a quantum mechanical particle, which is responsible for carrying gravitational force. According to this statement, it can be said that string theory focuses mainly on quantum gravity thus it is a theory of quantum gravity.
The main goal of string theory is an attempt in order to address in-depth questions about fundamental physics. It is said to be a broad subject that holds a wide range of concepts. Concept of black hole, cosmology, nuclear physics, matter physics etc are some of those concepts in which string theory is applied in order to solve a variety of questions. In the field of pure mathematics, many developments are carried out successfully by the application of string theory. String theory is said to be a theory for everything, since it contains descriptive concepts of gravity and particle physics. It literally covers all fundamental forces and concept of matter physics, which makes it a self-contained mathematical structure.
Despite the theory being too much descriptive you may face certain challenges while trying to practically apply the theory. One of the major reasons behind these problems is that this theory does not contain a perfect definition that can be applied in all the situations and circumstances. It becomes complicated to develop particle physics theory based on string theory, since string theory describes a number of landscapes of possible universes. This fact can be determined as another limitation in application of string theory. As a response to these limitations, many communities criticize this theory for its various approaches in the field of physics. Many theorists and experts also question about the legality of the research that is being continued while using string theory as a base.

This is the only book that tells both sides of the story of germs: that they are critically important for our health and that the dangers of emerging pathogens continue to wreak havoc in our bodies and around the world. With straight-forward and engaging writing, infectious diseases physician Phillip Peterson surveys how our understanding of viruses has changed throughout history, from early plagues and pandemics to more recent outbreaks like HIV/AIDS, Ebola, and the Zika virus.Microbes also takes on contemporary issues like the importance of vaccinations in the face of the growing anti-vaxxer movement, as well as the rise of cutting-edge health treatments like fecal transplants.Peterson relays his first-hand experience dealing with an unprecedented emergence of new microbial threats. Yet at the same time he has witnessed the astounding recent discoveries of the crucial role of the microbes that colonize our body surfaces in human health.Microbes explains for general audiences where these germs came from, what they do to and for us, and what can be done to stop the bad actors and foster the benefactors.
