Summary

Starting in the mid-20th century, the idea of "improving" the race and prolonging life began to gain ground, and by the 1990s it materialized in a philosophy called "transhumanism". In the 21st century, the global elites and the World Economic Forum took the initiative to accelerate and order this paradigm shift. Right now, they are working on the acceptance of ideas such as living on Mars or merging the biological, the technological and the physical. It will no longer be about the survival of the fittest, but about the specific design of beings. The position of creation, guidance and control will belong to the race itself, or at least to a part of it.

A scientist integrates evolutionary biology, genetics, psychology, economics, and more to explore the development and workings of human societies. “There is no good reason why human societies should not be described and explained with the same precision and success as the rest of nature.” Thus argues evolutionary psychologist Pascal Boyer in this uniquely innovative book. Integrating recent insights from evolutionary biology, genetics, psychology, economics, and other fields, Boyer offers precise models of why humans engage in social behaviors such as forming families, tribes, and nations, or creating gender roles. In fascinating, thought-provoking passages, he explores questions such as: Why is there conflict between groups? Why do people believe low-value information such as rumors? Why are there religions? What is social justice? What explains morality? Boyer provides a new picture of cultural transmission that draws on the pragmatics of human communication, the constructive nature of memory in human brains, and human motivation for group formation and cooperation.“Cool and captivating…It will change forever your understanding of society and culture.”—Dan Sperber, co-author of The Enigma of Reason“It is highly recommended…to researchers firmly settled within one of the many single disciplines in question. Not only will they encounter a wealth of information from the humanities, the social sciences and the natural sciences, but the book will also serve as an invitation to look beyond the horizons of their own fields.”—Eveline Seghers, Evolutionary Studies in Imaginative Culture

Bus design is often taken for granted, yet from the earliest days of motorbuses coachbuilders have worked hard to produce vehicles that are both attractive and practical. From the 1950s, bus builders and operators have faced the challenges of new shapes and layouts with the widespread adoption of underfloor and rear-engine designs and there was recognition that passengers expected something rather better than a basic bus if they were to leave their cars at home.
This new ebook looks at the development and evolution of bus design and covers the years from 1950 to the present day to reveal just how the UK's bus builders have risen to the challenge and produced buses with the elusive 'wow factor'. The book is packed with photographs, many of which are professionally-taken official bodybuilders' or operators' views as these show the many important design features clearly and in detail. These photographs are supported by in-service views, showing the bus in its working environment.
This beautifully designed and illustrated book will appeal not only to ardent road transport enthusiasts, but will also be of interest to bus manufacturers and designers, and anyone interested in industrial design.

A groundbreaking global investigation into the industry ravaging the environment and global health—from the James Beard Award–winning journalistOver the past few decades, palm oil has seeped into every corner of our lives. Worldwide, palm oil production has nearly doubled in just the last decade: oil palm plantations now cover an area nearly the size of New Zealand, and some form of the commodity lurks in half the products on US grocery shelves. But the palm oil revolution has been built on stolen land and slave labor; it's swept away cultures and so devastated the landscapes of Southeast Asia that iconic animals now teeter on the brink of extinction. Fires lit to clear the way for plantations spew carbon emissions to rival those of industrialized nations.James Beard Award–winning journalist Jocelyn C. Zuckerman spent years traveling the globe, from Liberia to Indonesia, India to Brazil, reporting on the human and environmental impacts of this poorly understood plant. The result is Planet Palm, a riveting account blending history, science, politics, and food as seen through the people whose lives have been upended by this hidden ingredient. This groundbreaking work of first-rate journalism compels us to examine the connections between the choices we make at the grocery store and a planet under siege.
