Summary

The story of shared services cooperatives is compelling for the breadth and depth of its utility across multiple sectors of the US economy. Shared services cooperatives are member associations formed to meet a variety of institutional needs for economies and efficiencies of scale through collaboration in areas such as purchasing, marketing, processing and distribution. They are organized and operate as for-profit or not-for-profit business entities and appear in a broad array of industry and public service sectors, providing a variety of benefits, services and opportunities today in rural, suburban and urban communities throughout the US. This qualitative study sets out to describe the ways in which shared services cooperatives are organized, who are the members, how shared services cooperatives benefit their members and why the members formed a cooperative as opposed to other forms of collaboration (joint ventures, subsidiaries or collaborative agreements). Shared services cooperatives in all the cases studied have led to long-term impacts in addressing organizational needs. All the cooperatives in this study have effectively served their members’ needs. Whether it was a cooperative designed to enhance competitiveness, or to lower risks, to acquire new sources of funding or to allow the cooperative members to scale up or sustain the organization, the story has been the same. The shared services cooperative works very well as a way to meet these varied needs.

How to Create a Healthy Home...

If you run a business from home, then it's important to recognize that it's going to mean living a completely different lifestyle from the majority of people you know. Not having a commute in the morning, not spending all day sitting in an office and being able to generally create your own working hours puts you on an entirely different page from most people you'll know. For the most part, this is a good thing. Being able to set your working hours, to dictate the way you work and when you work and getting to spend time doing something you love can all contribute to a much happier and healthier lifestyle on the whole. In fact, it's a starting point for improving overall health.

At the same time though, this type of lifestyle also brings with it its own challenges. And because very few people live the same lifestyle you do, that means you're going to be somewhat 'on your own' when it comes to finding advice on how to manage this work-life balance.

Here's the long and the short of it: being self-employed and working from home gives you the freedom to begin your own 'lifestyle design'. This is pretty much the way things are moving and is likely the future of working. Technology is making it possible for us to work remotely in more and more industries and more and more roles. The benefits of this kind of work drastically outweigh the cons – for both the employee and employer – and so the traditional office may soon become a rarity rather than the norm. That means the emphasis is on increasingly more of us to look after our own health and work-life balance. This book will help you to do just that.

The source of the problem is not so much the new, but the threat of the loss of the old. Resistance to change is often grudgingly accepted as an unavoidable challenge for organizations striving to remain competitive in the global marketplace. However, NOT ONE of the existing change methodologies has recognized, integrated, or even mentioned the true origin of the term Resistance. How can your organization avoid the 70% organizational change failure rate that has plagued change initiatives for more than 15 years? Is there an organizational change tool that will predictably and measurably improve the overall success rate? Drs. Victoria (Jr.) and James (Sr.) Grady have uncovered the answers! The Pivot Point presents the verdict in two easy to read sections: The Pivot Point provides an explanation, not an excuse, for an organizational change failure rate which has continued to hover near 70% for 15 + year. The Pivot Point highlights the steps to measure, track, and proactively intervene to maximize change success. The Pivot Point introduces information that will enhance, not replace, existing methodologies currently implemented by change agents and consultants.

People and organizations tend to approach chaos as if it were an unruly beast—something that needs to be reined in, or avoided at all costs. But what if there's a benefit to chaos? What if it's actually crucial for inspiring industry innovation? In The Chaos Imperative organizational thinker and bestselling author Ori Brafman and management consultant Judah Pollack dramatically demonstrate how even the best and most efficient organizations—from Fortune 500 companies to today’s US Army—can become more innovative by allowing a little unstructured space and “contained chaos” into their planning and decision-making.Through their consulting work, they realized that while structure and hierarchy are essential both in large corporations and small groups, too much of either can stifle creativity.Weaving together stories and case studies with insights from areas as far-reaching as neuroscience, medieval history, and video gaming, Brafman and Pollack reveal how creating pockets of chaos within organizations can inspire the creative leaps that lead to new growth.
