Summary

Carolyn Miller is a lyric poet of redeeming grace and intense clarity. Her poems are grounded in a sense of the marvelous, as if viewing life through a jewel, transforming the dark world of memory and desire into a luminous presence. She is a master of distilled moments. The mood of the poems in Route 66 and Its Sorrows is both elegiac and celebratory. She returns us to what is nurturing in our lives and in the world: “everywhere / cicadas and crickets are rasping out their brief sentient lives, / and off in the woods a whippoorwill keeps calling / that each moment is sweeter and more precious / than any you will ever taste again.” I read her poems with admiration and deep pleasure.—Joseph Stroud

'I am up for it. All the time. That's not a boast. Or an opinion. It is bone-hard medical fact.'
John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester. Charismatic poet, playwright and rake with a legendary appetite for excess. Yet when a chance encounter with an actress at the Playhouse sends him reeling, he is forced to reconsider everything he thinks and feels.
With all the wit, flair and bawdiness of a Restoration comedy, Stephen Jeffreys' brilliant play is an incisive critique of life in an age of excess.
Originally performed at the Royal Court Theatre in 1994, The Libertine has been staged around the world, was adapted for radio, and became a film. This edition of the play was published alongside the 2016 production at the Theatre Royal Bath and Theatre Royal Haymarket, directed by Terry Johnson and starring Dominic Cooper as Wilmot.

Three Sisters is a naturalistic play about the decay of the privileged class in Russia and the search for meaning in the modern world. It describes the lives and aspirations of the Prozorov family, the three sisters (Olga, Masha, and Irina) and their brother Andrei. They are a family dissatisfied and frustrated with their present existence. The sisters are refined and cultured young women who grew up in urban Moscow; however for the past eleven years they have been living in a small provincial town. Moscow is a major symbolic element: the sisters are always dreaming of it and constantly express their desire to return. They identify Moscow with their happiness, and thus to them it represents the perfect life. However as the play develops Moscow never materializes and they all see their dreams recede further and further. Meaning never presents itself and they are forced to seek it out for themselves. The Poetry of ELLA WHEELER WILCOX. American poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox was born on 5th November, 1850 in Wisconsin. She started writing poetry at the age of 7 and derived an income from her poems as a teenager. She married Robert Wilcox and together they shared a deep interest in mysticism, spiritualism and theosophy, travelling the world to learn more and socialising and spreading their ideas back in their home in Conneticut which was named Bungalow Court. Popularly known as the poetess of passion her work is often quoted by a wide variety of public figures from Diana, the Princess of Wales and Margaret Thatcher to F Scott Fitzgerald and Jack London. The universal themes and simple expression often convey fundamental truths. Laugh and the world laughs with you, Weep, and you weep alone; and "Love lights more fires than hate extinguishes" are just a couple of her insightful lines that live on for every new generation. These poems are read by Richard Mitchley & Ghizela Rowe.

Poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell was a volume of poetry published jointly by the three Bronte sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne in 1846, and their first work to ever go in print. To evade contemporary prejudice against female writers, the Bronte sisters adopted androgynous first names. Marked by profound sentiments, gravity and melodious harmony, the poems are strewn on the fields of soulful love, rueful reminiscence and the immortal yearnings of a Christian soul, and represent a fragrant assemblage of noetic flowers from the glebes of olden England. For those not familiar with the Bronte sisters' poetry, it should be noted that many of their poems were written in the context of their fictional, shared worlds of Gondal and Angria.
