There began a friendship that would span continents as both men ascended the ranks of literary stardom. Naipaul’s early encouragement of Theroux’s talent had a profound impact on him—yet the apprenticeship was not always easy.

This heartfelt and revealing account of Theroux's thirty-year friendship with Naipaul explores the unique effect each writer had on the other. Built around exotic landscapes, anecdotes that are revealing, humorous, and melancholy, and three decades of mutual history, this is a personal account of how one develops as a writer and how a friendship waxes and wanes between two men who have set themselves on the perilous journey of a writing life.

Elliot Paul, an American journalist, first walked into rue de la Huchette in the summer of 1923. 'There,' he wrote, 'I found Paris.' His biography of the street brings to life a cast of charaters, from the stately M. de Malancourt to l'Hibou the tramp, from the culturally precocious Hyacinthe to a bevy of prostitutes. Their friendships and enmities, culture and way of life are woven into a tapestry as compelling as a novel. Yet as the threat of the Second World War grows and the political polarisation between right and left intensifies, it endows their quiet, heroic lives with a tragic poignancy. The Last Time I Saw Paris is one of the great portraits of an unforgettable city.

Since its earliest days, Christians have travelled as pilgrims to religious sites and holy places. In recent years pilgrimages to major and minor places associated with the Christian faith have become increasingly popular.

Pilgrims explores the meaning of pilgrimage as part of the Church’s tradition and also in the lives of individual Christians. Each chapter focuses on a particular place of pilgrimage within Britain and Ireland, such as Canterbury, Lindisfarne and Kildare, offering some historical background and exploring why this location has become such a powerful magnet for pilgrims over the ages.

Stephen Platten relates pilgrims and pilgrimages to a wide range of themes from Christian theology, spirituality and literature. The book can be used by individuals and groups, whether they are visiting some of the places referred to in the book or are seeking to enrich their spiritual lives as “armchair pilgrims”.
