Summary

A love worth the wait

Carter Hamilton and Riley Porter-Wright room together as Harvard undergraduates. An immediate friendship forms, but as the years pass it deepens into something neither man understands. As attraction simmers under the surface, lines begin to blur. When they move back to Manhattan, they gradually slip into the lives their families have envisioned for them.

Both men marry, but in time, Riley realizes he’s ended up in a passionless relationship like his parents’ while his career takes center stage. Although he loves his wife, Carter misses the emotional and physical connection he shared with Riley.

The weight of Riley’s feelings and his growing discontentment with his life eventually push him to tell Carter the truth about how he feels. Shocked and unable to face his own feelings, Carter rejects Riley.

As each man comes to terms with the lies they’ve told themselves, each other and the people around them, they find their lives changing in ways they never imagined. They soon discover that the truths they’ve been longing to tell shake the foundations of their friendship.

On one remarkable spring day, the fresh-faced, 20 year old virgin Polly Montgomery has her whole life turned on end, when an out-of-the-closet lesbian, Galen Davis, lures her to her room, and initiates the bewildered Polly into lesbian sex. That afternoon, while Polly is still reeling from the unexpected tryst, Dale Joyce, a pre-law big-man-on-campus invites her to his off campus house to work on a class project. Suddenly, the astute and very dominant Dale has taken her virginity in a profound scene of sexual submission. For the next three months, Polly becomes the acquiescent plaything to both Galen and Dale. While Galen's style is easy and seductive, Dale becomes a demanding and sometimes brutal master who takes this sexual novice into the dark realms of her sexual desires, into pain, humiliation and bondage. Once Galen and Dale graduate, however, Polly is on her own, and for the next ten years she submerges herself in a career producing Art videos for a local museum. Polly effectively ignores sex, until she finds herself enthralled by a Femme Dyke, Carly, who is soon demanding her submission. Then, as if history is repeating itself...while doing a pre-production interview with artist Howard Garth, Polly is stranded for two days at his hilltop home, when a mudslide takes out the road. Like Dale before him, Howard Garth keys in on Polly's profoundly submissive nature, and her brief but explosive affair reacquaints her with a raw sexual need she's tried to run from. Weeks later, at a museum opening, Polly finds herself enchanted by a famous, but reclusive black artist, Theo Gray. When Theo suddenly demands her presence at his Caribbean estate for an interview, she's more than ready to go. However, Gray's bodyguards unexpectedly whisk her away in a private jet, and Polly learns that Theo has more in mind for her than a simple interview. The luscious beauty is to be his next conquest, his next slave.

In this, Chesnutt's first novel, he tells the tragic story of love set against a backdrop of racism, miscegenation and “passing” during the period spanning the antebellum and reconstruction eras in American history. And through his use of the vernacular prevalent in the South of that time, Chesnutt lent a compassionate voice to a group that America did not want to hear. More broadly, however, Chesnutt illustrated, in this character play, the vast and perhaps insurmountable debt this country continues to pay for the sins of slavery. (Summary by James K. White)

Two young people, the epitome of young masculine and feminine beauty, fall in love at first sight, but their union is forbidden by the tyranny of their guardians and of geography itself, for they live on opposite sides of the Hellespont. To enjoy one night of love, Leander dares to swim this formidable strait, unluckily meeting the god Neptune along the way. Unaware of the resentment he has aroused by rejecting the advances of this old queen of the sea, the lad gains the shore and, once past the shock of appearing naked on his lover's doorstep, finds his way into her bed. There the young couple, although ignorant of the facts of life (Hero is a "nun" in the temple of Venus!), discover "all that elder lovers know" by (awkward) trial and (hilarious) error. The unfinished poem ends with one lover having fallen out of bed, the long return journey across the Hellespont still to come and an angry Neptune lying in wait. Although George Chapman continued the poem after Marlowe's death, this reading is of Marlowe's original only. (Summary by Thomas Copeland)
