Summary

Not yet a woman yet more than a little girl, Rae Dodson is caught up in her family's drama. Her hip older sister, Kimmie, whom her mother favors, has moved from New Orleans to join them in Detroit, a city that moves as if in synch with the Stevie Wonder tunes that play giddily from new automobiles fresh off the factory lots. Her bid whist–playing mother is as nervous as ever, and her father's chronic migraines seem less responsive to medication. And while they all occupy the same house, they might as well be living separate lives. When the tenuous peace finally breaks, Rae must decide where her loyalties lie: should she choose her emotionally distant mother, whom she adores, or her affectionate but needy father? Rae does choose and launches into a rich, loving relationship with her dad, for whom she shows a fierce, undying loyalty. But as she matures, she must find a way amid her own budding sexuality to be both Daddy's girl and her own woman.

“One of the most beautiful qualities of true friendship is to understand and to be understood.”
    - Seneca.

Letters from a Stoic is a timeless guide to living the good life. The moral epistles were written by Seneca at the end of his life, during his retirement, after he had worked for the Emperor Nero for fifteen years. They are addressed to Lucilius, the then procurator of Sicily, although he is known only through Seneca's writings. Whether or not Seneca and Lucilius actually corresponded, or whether in fact Seneca created the work as a form of fiction, is not clear from the historical record.

This is the second volume of the Letters, Epistles LXVI-XCII.

The goals of the budo—the martial arts and Ways of Japan—lie in refining the body and spirit. The techniques, methods, and rituals of the budo can provide invaluable lessons for today's martial artists—and serve as guides to a well-lived life.In Traditions, Davy Lowry discusses unique aspects of the budo ranging from hacho, or deliberate asymmetry, to uke-waza, the art of "receiving" an attack. The spirit of ryomi, the process of self-evaluation and improvement, is illustrated through the story of Kaofujita, a master swordsman who never stopped practicing the first movement he learned. You'll also learn the importance of yuyo, the distance where an attacker must focus his strike, from the story of Jubei, whose mastery of yuyo saved him in a life-and-death encounter, and the significance of shikaku—, the dead zone, on maintaining balance in combat and in life. With its focus on traditional martial arts, and fascinating stories that illustrate key martial arts principles and philosophy,Traditions will be required reading for serious martial artists.

Japanese Hiragana & Katakana Practice Pad provides an enjoyable and motivating way for the learner to have practice in writing the syllables of the Japanese hiragana and katakana writing systems. There are a total of 365 practice sheets—one per day for a year of learning, or more than one per day for faster progress!—as well as basic instructions and extra sheets of blank squared paper for extra practice. The syllables are introduced in a logical order, along with their equivalents in the roman alphabet and several examples, and practice is given in using them to write simple, useful Japanese language words. Word-stroke diagrams are provided for each character. Structured space around the edge of each page allows the user to first trace the shapes on top of the models, and then write the syllables independently. This volume will provide a good foundation for anybody interested in mastering the basic kana syllables essential for learning Japanese.
