Summary

I'm getting married. Yay!
Well, I think I'm getting married. My fiancé did propose, it's just that he seems hesitant to set a  date. I get it, marriage is a big step. And it would be no big deal if it wasn't for our families and the feud that's been raging between them for decades. Now the women of both families have drawn a line in the sand, which just happens to be planning my southern wedding. Both sides insist on being involved. So far, all that's meant is a lot of insult slinging and a buttload of pink.
Then there's the fact that I'm a Grim Reaper, and my current client is my fiancé's knucklehead uncle. As a mountain lion Shifter, he's fast, almost impossible to catch. Then there's the disturbing fact that he refuses to wear clothes. That's not a thing. I've reaped dozens of people, and they've all been dressed.
If all that wasn't bad enough, my mom sprung a surprise visit on me. Don't get me wrong, I love my mom, but boy does she have a surprise for me. If Jax and I don't nail down a date for the wedding, he'll realize what a mess he's marrying into.

“Rosson is a talent to be watched, and Riptide is one of the most immersive fictional settings in recent memory.” - Jason Heller, NPR
Riptide, Oregon, 1983. A sleepy coastal town, where crime usually consists of underage drinking down at a Wolf Point bonfire. But then strange things start happening—a human skeleton is unearthed in a local park and mutilated animals begin appearing, seemingly sacrificed, on the town’s beaches. The Mercy of the Tide follows four people drawn irrevocably together by a recent tragedy as they do their best to reclaim their lives—leading them all to a discovery that will change them and their town forever.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

The Edwardian era lasted under a decade at the turn of the 1900’s. Victoria was dead but everything else strode on. The Nation’s authors added to their number with new talents who attempted new ways of re-interpreting the Ghost Story. Benson, Pain and all the others found a ready audience for these sharp-edged gems and their malevolent ways.

The first story set in the fishing village of Kingsport, which is featured in the later works of the one of the greatest horror writers of all time.   It is rumored that the mysterious old man who lives alone in the small New England town was once a sea captain. It is also rumored that he is hoarding a treasure. When three robbers decide to steal it, they will encounter a bloodthirsty evil unlike any they ever imagined . . .   “The Terrible Old Man is the story of three career criminals looking to rob the eponymous character, an eccentric retired mariner so ancient that no one alive remembers his youth. . . . This is also the first story set in the fictional New England geography that Lovecraft will detail over the course of future writing. . . . So, what we see in these stories is Lovecraft beginning to construct the alternate world which will be the home to his most famous works, at least as much a unifying element of the author’s oeuvre as those details subsequent writers and critics have defined as the ‘Cthulhu Mythos.’ As such, The Terrible Old Man is not only an effective piece of eerie storytelling, it is also an important stepping stone in the development of a bigger Lovecraftian world.” —The Blood-Shed   “A piece of minimalist brushwork, with most of the narrative suggested by negative space . . . In sharp contrast to the central Mythos tales, the horror is allusive and oblique, the violence kept off-stage.” —Tor.com
