Sinopse

In "Up From Slavery," Booker T. Washington offers a poignant autobiography that chronicles his journey from the bondage of slavery to becoming a leading educator and civil rights advocate. Written in a direct and compelling style characteristic of late 19th-century African American literature, Washington's narrative provides a vivid account of the struggles and triumphs faced by newly freed blacks in the post-Civil War South. His frank reflections on the importance of education, self-reliance, and vocational training not only illuminate his personal experiences but also serve as a platform for broader discussions on race relations and social progress during the Reconstruction era. Booker T. Washington, born into slavery in 1856, emerged as a prominent African American voice advocating for the upliftment of his race through education and hard work. His experiences—ranging from childhood labor in salt furnaces to his founding of the Tuskegee Institute—shaped his philosophy that success would come through industrial education and economic self-sufficiency. Washington's ability to navigate the complexities of race and oppression in America laid the groundwork for his influential role in advocating for black empowerment during a turbulent historical period. "Up From Slavery" stands as a crucial read not only for those interested in the heritage of African American struggles but for anyone seeking inspiration from a life devoted to overcoming adversity. Washington's insights continue to resonate today, making this work an indispensable text for understanding the intersection of race, education, and the evolving American identity.

Lafcadio Hearn was born on the 27th June 1850 on the Ionian isle of Levkás in Greece to a British Army officer and a Greek Mother.
His father, fearing for his career prospects at being married to a Greek Orthodox wife, sent them to Dublin whilst he continued to advance his career with further postings. Life there was difficult for mother and son. His father returned, wounded and traumatised, when Lafcadio was three. He annulled the marriage and she remarried but had to give up care of Lafcadio to her sister-in law.
After brief periods for Catholic education in England and France he emigrated to Ohio in the United States when he was 19, taking on a series of casual jobs before embarking on a career as a journalist, publishing poems and essays in Cincinnati. It was whilst here that he began a side-line in translating, starting with Gautier and Flaubert. He married in 1874 to a 20 year old African-American woman in violation of Ohio's anti-miscegenation law. The marriage soon failed.
In 1877 he relocated to New Orleans to write on a variety of themes before picking up a two year assignment from Harper’s to write in the West Indies, where he also wrote his first novel.
In 1890 Harper’s sent him to Japan. Here he left journalism and took the remarkable decision to become a schoolteacher in the north of Japan. Enraptured by the culture he was driven to explain it in various Western publications to those who had little, if any, knowledge of its culture. Within the year he had fallen in love with, and married, a high-born Japanese lady, together they would have four children.
In 1895 he became a Japanese national and took the name Koizumi Yakumo, Koizumi being his wife’s family name.
The following few years, whilst a professor of Literature at the Imperial University of Japan, were his most creative and admired period.
Lafcadio Hearn died of heart failure on the 26th of September 1904, in Tokyo, Japan shortly before leaving to deliver a series of lectures at Cornell University in New York State. He was 54.

'This is a South African story of an unsung hero, a man forgotten by history – though not by me, nor by the people who knew and respected him …'
When his grandfather gave sermons, he was 'capable of shaking mountains', a church leader tells journalist and author Lesley Mofokeng. 'Ntate Mofokeng pulled people towards God with the great and rare talent of a motivator.'
In this revealing book, Mofokeng investigates the life of his grandfather, Mongangane Wilfred Mofokeng, a prominent Dutch Reformed Church evangelist. In the 1950s, as Black South Africans were being evicted from the cities to live in reserves and homelands, Mongangane set out to build a community at a dusty cattle post in the far North West province. There he managed to establish a resilient community that mostly lived outside the repressions of the apartheid regime. The journey takes the author from Johannesburg's Marabi-soaked townships of the 1930s to his childhood home of Gelukspan near Lichtenburg and then to rural Free State and the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. In what becomes a spiritual quest, he traces the inspirational footsteps of his ancestors and the legendary King Moshoeshoe.
Mofokeng also explores the politics and history of the Dutch Reformed Church's Black constituency and uncovers why to this day it is called Kereke ya Fora – or 'Church of the French' – and its hymns are sung across denominations and in social spaces outside the church.

Growing up, Mickey Rowe was told that he couldn’t enter the mainstream world.

He was iced out by classmates and colleagues, infantilized by well-meaning theatre directors, barred from even earning a minimum wage. Why? Because he is autistic.

Fearlessly Different: An Autistic Actor’s Journey to Broadway’s Biggest Stage is Mickey Rowe’s inspiring story. As an autistic and legally blind person, it was always made clear to Mickey the many things he was apparently incapable of
doing. But Mickey did them all anyway—and he succeeded because of, not in spite of, his autism. He became the first autistic actor to play the lead role in the play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, landed the title role in the
play Amadeus, cocreated the theatre/philanthropy company Arts on the Waterfront, and founded the National Disability Theatre. Mickey faced untold obstacles along the way, but his story ends in triumph.

Many people feel they are locked out of the world of autism—that it’s impossible to even begin to understand. In Fearlessly Different, Mickey guides readers to that world while also helping those with autism to feel seen and understood. And he
shows all people—autistic and nonautistic alike—that the things that make us different are often our biggest strengths.
