Summary

'The History of the Black Hawk War & Autobiography of the Sauk Leader, the Great Black Hawk' is a poignant collection that immerses readers into the depths of Native American history through the dual perspectives of historical analysis and personal narrative. This anthology juxtaposes the factual recount of the Black Hawk War with the emotive autobiography of Black Hawk himself, offering a fusion of literary styles that range from the scholarly to the deeply personal. The collection sheds light on the tumultuous times of the early 19th century, providing depth and breadth to the struggles and resistance of Native American tribes, especially the Sauk and Fox nations. The anthology brings together the expertise of Charles M. Scanlan's historical narratives with the forceful, singular voice of Black Hawk, whose life stories give a face to the countless indigenous narratives often marginalized in American history. This blending of voices from different times and perspectives enriches the narrative, aligning with broader cultural and literary movements that advocate for indigenous rights and historical re-evaluation. This collection is indispensable for anyone interested in understanding the nuanced perspectives of Native American history, offering a unique dialogue between historians and the firsthand account of a renowned Sauk leader. Readers seeking a comprehensive understanding of this era will find both educational value and emotional resonance in the profound juxtaposition of scholarly research and autobiographical authenticity. This book not only educates but also fosters a necessary dialogue between the past and present considerations of indigeneity in America.

This new collection of archive imagery from Philip Kaplan offers a gripping, graphic view of the routine repeated each day and night, from the summer of 1940 through to the following spring, by the German bomber crews bringing their deadly cargoes to Britain. Through mainly German archival photos, it profiles airmen on their French bases and in the skies over England; the aircraft they flew, fought and sometimes died in; their leaders; their targets and results; the R.A.F pilots and aircraft that stood in opposition to the German forces, and the losses experienced on both sides. The images, from the Bundesarchiv and other German and British photographic sources, vividly convey a real sense of events as they played out, as do the compelling first-hand accounts from a host of participants on both sides, eyewitnesses to one of the most brutal sustained bombardments of the Second World War.

If you were to think of integrating the principles of  Zen Buddhism into music, punk rock would probably not be part of the equation.  Philip Toshio Sudo, a musician and longtime practitioner of Zen, chose to play punk rock  because "the technique is secondary to the passion and intensity of the performance."  The type of music you prefer is not, however, what's important; what is important is the method Sudo has developed for bringing that passion and intensity to anything you want to learn.

On the night of 5/6 June 1944, D-Day, a Lockheed Hudson dropped a small group of parachutists into the mountainous Morvan area of central France. Their mission was to operate as an advance reconnaissance party 400 miles behind the German lines and to make contact with the French Resistance. One of the team, later to become its commander, was Ian Wellsted, known by his nom-de-guerrre of Gremlin. During the next three months No.1 Troop of the 1st Special Air Service Regiment relayed vital information about enemy troop locations and movements, sabotaged bridges and supply lines, skirmished with German columns and harried the occupying forces as they retreated eastwards in the face of the Allied invasion.Camped deep in the woods of the Montsaughe region, the small force worked alongside the local groups of Maquis, forging strong links of mutual respect and friendship.Ian Wellsteds exciting first-hand account of his operations behind enemy lines is a tale of gallantry and daring, of comradeship and cooperation, full of humour and perceptive insight revealing one of the most significant chapters in the history of the SAS.
