Summary

This poetry collection is the second poetry book written by Beverley Joughin-Robson. There are a variety of poems to suit all tastes and ages. Some poems were written when sitting quietly in idyllic settings, others were written during more passionate or sentimental moments. Some are childish rhymes inspired by children and grandchildren. The last section reflects on the strange and emotive period of time, when we were all affected by the Covid-19 pandemic; Light-hearted comments and poignant reflections, interspersed with emotional and anxious moments. The rhythms, rhyme patterns, language and structure are selected and adapted to suit the various ideas, themes and emotions captured, including sonnets, the writer’s favourite form.
Although many of the poems are very personal, the intention is to appeal to everyone. The compilation was not intended to be just a collection of poems from the poet’s life experiences, but to incorporate poems which engage with others. Reading these poems should be like looking back over old photographs, taking you back to moments in life and arousing forgotten memories.
Available since: 10/01/2021.

This was the weekly poem for Flag Day 2006. It tells the largely-apocryphal but nonetheless inspiring story of one old woman’s act of patriotism during a Confederate advance in the civil war. (summary by LauraFox)

An Israeli violinist. Living in her trendy canal-side Amsterdam apartment. Nine months pregnant.
One day a mysterious unpaid gas bill from 1944 arrives.
Slid her an envelope right under the door and then just walked away.
It awakens unsettling feelings of collective identity, foreignness and alienation. Stories of a devastating past are compellingly reconstructed to try and make sense of the present.
Maya Arad Yasur's play Amsterdam is a strikingly original, audacious thriller. It received its UK premiere in this English translation by Eran Edry at the Orange Tree Theatre, Richmond, in September 2019.

In science one reasons by analogy, so when mankind is confronted by experiences entirely beyond its understanding it takes an individual with intelligence and bravery in equal measure to push back the boundaries of the unknown….
In London, in the 1900s, the solutions to supernatural occurrences were investigated by a man who was famous for his dealings with the unknown and the worlds of the dead: Jarrem Lee - Ghost Hunter, (or as he prefers to call it, a psychical detective). With the help of college student Arthur Bennett, he embarks on a series of spine-tingling and exciting adventures in the world of the dead.
Episode 17 - A Ghost from the Past - When he was younger, Jarrem Lee once succeeded in summoning a daemon and ever since he's kept a dark secret. Some ghosts cannot be left in the past.
Episode 18 - The Death Knell - Someone is tolling the church bell in the peaceful village of Loscombe and the whole village is afraid. Reverend Upway thinks it's a supernatural force and calls in the ghost-hunter.
Episode 19 - All Cats Are Grey - The most curious of cases can affect the plainest of people. What is the strange creature which cries outside the house of unassuming Harold Rayner each night?
Episode 20 - The Radinski Automaton - Professor Radinski's Automaton is truly a remarkable machine, more skilful, graceful and talented than any man alive. But is there also a dark secret at the heart of the machine?

Early poems of this famous English lyric poet, in which he openly expresses indebtedness to, and reverence for, his poetic predecessors, especially Spenser, into whose chivalric world he boldly ventures; and also for Milton, and the classic poets. There are also glimpses of his personal, family and political relationships. These poems are of medium length and often pastoral and contemplative in nature with many classical references. His lyric genius and love for humanity are clearly displayed.( Peter Tucker)

Probably written in the latter half of the 14th century in the South-West-Midlands dialect, Piers Plowman is a remarkable example of allegorical, alliterative verse that conveyed, for the first time ever, the authentic voice, spirit and character of the ordinary people of England. Very little is known about William Langland, the presumed author, but it is very much a product of the medieval mind combining Christian belief with dramatic poetry in a drama of identity. While the characters are less rounded, more-two dimensional than the fully developed protagonists of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, they comprise an illuminating sample of the English type: the ‘every-men' and women of their time, from the plowman to the wastrel, the merchant to the priest, the high-born lady to the harlot. No-one is spared. Opening with a dream, or vision, a structural device made popular by the 13th-century French poet Guillaume de Loris in his Roman de la Rose and used most successfully by Dante in his Divine Comedy, Langland proceeds to explore his theme: namely, the world and the path the true Christian must follow through it to achieve salvation in life. In the course of the events which he goes on to describe, in a series of visions and successive awakenings, he paints a wonderfully detailed and highly critical picture of the corruption and abuses in the church and in society. Concepts become characters in the drama of life; Reason, Conscience, Recompense, Wealth, Will, Desire, “All the world's weal, all the world's woe,” are examined metaphorically in the context of the changing realities of the medieval economy. Piers Plowman embodies the Will. He is the good Christian who carries Jesus Christ in his heart, a good person who works hard for the benefit of the community and his own soul. His attitudes and actions are in counterpoint to those of a whole range of less edifying characters: ne'er-do-wells, layabouts, good-for-nothings, lollers and grafters, corrupt clergy, friars, pardoners, summoners, beer-watering publicans, brothel keepers, liars, robbers and cheats. The poem is remarkable for the way in which it comprises a range of modes and genres, from sermonising and psychomachia to biblical history and satires on social status, flowing effortlessly, almost seamlessly, from one to the other. It holds the mirror up to medieval society and it does not flatter. It is by turns both prophetic and apocalyptic, reflecting multiple facets of the Christian imagination. The series of visions revealed to the listener can be seen as didactic processes, or steps on the spiritual journey to salvation and include the shriving of the Seven Deadly Sins and the Vision of Antichrist. This version also contains a marvellously vivid description of the Harrowing of Hell, which prefigures the infernal imagery recreated 300 years later in John Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost. This rendering of Piers Plowman in modern English by Arthur Burrell comes to life as never before in this lively, nuanced recording performed by Mike Rogers.

We all have our comfort blankets and coping mechanisms. And if yours happens to be wearing a full-sized rabbit onesie (with ears), what's the problem? You're not bothering anyone. At least, not until you're photographed at the back of a child's funeral. Dressed as a rabbit. And the photo goes viral.
Rose Heiney's Original Death Rabbit is a painfully funny play, shining a light on one woman's struggle with the dark side of the internet. Originally broadcast on BBC Radio 4, the play received its stage premiere at Jermyn Street Theatre, London, in January 2019.
