Summary

1929 was the end of a golden age. Six aspiring writers spin tales set in a time in history when changes were afoot. While some sought the American Dream, others had to deal with vampiric siblings. Facing lost loves and gaining new freedoms define the beginning of a new age. Of course, the government was going through some changes itself in The Black Chamber, while everyday heroes could be confused with the Devil.

Henry, Little Tree," by e. e. cummings, "The Little Match Girl" by Hans Christian Anderson and an excerpt from "A Christmas Carol," by Charles Dickens. "The Owl and the Pussycat, by Edward Lear is here. Though strictly speaking, Lear's poem is not a Christmas poem, but it does express the fun and frivolity of the season and it is included. In addition there is the moving story "Christmas at Red Butte," by L. M. Montgomery, "Yes, Virginia…" the famous editorial by Francis Pharcellus Church and " 'Twas the Night Before Christmas," by Anonymous. This is probably the most famous Christmas poem of all time. Clement C. Moore is usually credited as its author. However, there is controversy as to who is the actual author. So here we use the credit that was given in its original publication in The Troy Sentinel newspaper in 1823.Jennifer James, award winning SAG/AFTRA actor narrates most of the selections in this audio book. And Brad Rearden contributes his masterful reading of " 'Twas the Night Before Christmas."We are dedicating this Christmas audio book to the brave men and women of the American military and in their honor we have included poems that were written in wartime: "Christmas Bells," by Henry Longfellow; "Wartime Christmas," by Joyce Kilmer and "Noel: Christmas Eve 1913," by Robert Bridges. In addition, there is a story about the Battle of Trenton, "Christmas Day: 1776," by Jennifer James. A portion of each unit sold will be donated to the USO.

Late one night, a mysterious girl named Natty arrives on the river with a request for Jim from her father - Long John Silver. Aged and weak, but still possessing a strange power, the pirate proposes Jim and Natty sail to Treasure Island in search of Captain Flint's hidden bounty. But the thrill of the ocean odyssey gives way to terror as the Nightingale reaches its destination, for it seems Treasure Island is not as uninhabited as it once was... Silver is a worthy sequel to Treasure Island and a work of extraordinary authenticity and imaginative power from one of England's greatest writers.

The pedigrees of our county families, arranged in diagrams on the pages of county histories, mostly appear at first sight to be as barren of any touch of nature as a table of logarithms. But given a clue-the faintest tradition of what went on behind the scenes, and this dryness as of dust may be transformed into a palpitating drama. Out of such pedigrees and supplementary material most of the following stories have arisen and taken shape. (Summary adapted from the preface)

“Earthy, thoughtful, funny” stories of love and despair, destiny and dumb luck, by the author of Last Exit to Brooklyn and Requiem for a Dream (Library Journal). Hubert Selby Jr. made an indelible mark on contemporary American literature with Last Exit to Brooklyn, a controversial novel that explored life at the lowest strata of urban society. But even before that novel altered the landscape of American fiction, Selby was honing his literary craft with short fiction that cast the human condition in a stark light, stories “known for their harrowing portrayal of mere mortals chasing their delusions down the drain” (Salon.com).   The stories here represent Selby at his best, whether he’s exploring a married commuter’s fantasy about a stranger he sees every morning on the subway or wryly spinning the tale of a salesman whose life is dictated by Chinese fortune cookies. In these pages, a homeless man clings to his old army coat during a bitter lost weekend; and a young man’s successful attempt to impress a girl on their first date comes back to haunt him. In the intimate, sometimes shocking portraits collected in Song of the Silent Snow, Selby finds the delicate balance between joy and despair, revealing humanity in the darkest corners of existence.   “Selby’s writing never diminished; it always increased. His body of work is among the very highest of contemporary writers. He did not get the acknowledgment that he deserved, but he will.” —John Rechy, author of City of Night  This ebook features an illustrated biography of Hubert Selby Jr. including rare photos from the author’s estate.
