Are you constantly striving to keep up with life's busy expectations? It's easy to feel consumed with the desire to "succeed" and "acquire," and miss the simple opportunities waiting for you to slow down: a walk in the forest, sharing laughter with family, a personal moment of gratitude . . .
Once upon a time, it became clear to Brooke McAlary that the key to happiness was discovering a simpler, more fulfilling existence. She put the brakes on her stressful path, and reorganized her life to live outside the status-quo, emphasizing depth, connection, and meaningful experiences. Alongside Brooke's affirming personal stories of breaking down and rising up, Slow provides practical advice and fascinating insights into the benefits and challenges of the slow life, such as: decluttering to de-owning; messiness to mindfulness; and asking why to asking where to now?
Slow is an inspirational guide on creating a life filled with the things that really matter, and is meant for anyone seeking peace, meaning, and joy in their otherwise rapid lives.
The end of the Peloponnesian War saw Sparta emerge as the dominant power in the Greek world. Had she used this position wisely her hegemony might have been secure. As it was, she embarked on actions that her former allies, Thebes and Korinth, refused to support. The rise of Thebes as a threatening power to Sparta's control of Greece was largely the result of the brilliant exploits of Epaminondas and Pelopidas whose obvious examination of Spartan tactics allowed them to provide counters to them. While noting the political issues, Godfrey Hutchinson's focus is upon the strategic and tactical elements of warfare in a period almost wholly coinciding with the reign of the brilliant commander, Agesilaos, one of the joint kings of Sparta, who, astonishingly, campaigned successfully into his eighties.
A biography of one of Germany’s pioneers in aerial combat: “a great read” (Internet Modeler). Max Immelmann was born in Dresden, the son of a container factory owner. When World War I started, Immelmann was recalled to active service, transferred to the Luftstreitkäfte, and sent for pilot training in November 1914. He was on his way to becoming a legendary flying ace. Initially stationed in northern France as a reconnaissance aviator, he was shot down by a French pilot but managed to land safely behind German lines. He was decorated with the Iron Cross, Second Class for preserving his aircraft. Later in 1915, he became one of the first German fighter pilots, quickly building an impressive score of victories as he became known as The Eagle of Lille, Der Adler von Lille. Known for the aerial combat maneuver that bears his name; for the use of a machine gun synchronized to fire forward through the propeller arc; and for his association with the Fokker Eindecker, Germany’s first fighter aircraft, Immelmann was the first pilot to be awarded the Pour le Mérite, Germany’s highest military honor—which became colloquially known as the “Blue Max” in the German Air Service. Along with Oswald Boelcke and other pilots, Immelmann was one of the main instigators of the Fokker Scourge, which inflicted heavy losses upon British and French aircrews during 1915. He was credited with fifteen victories—the final one coming on March 30, 1916. This Casemate edition of Max Immelmann’s biography does not change a word from the original 1930 edition, but for the first time, reworks the original type and page layout to provide a beautiful and highly readable new treatment to this classic of aviation literature.
