Summary

A large percentage of the population experiences some type of trauma in their lifetime; however, they don't all develop a diagnosable disorder. Even though no research can definitively predict what types of traumas will elicit a diagnosable disorder, there has been some indication as to who is more at risk for the development of trauma-related disorders, specifically Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Yet other disorders may also be elicited such as anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, or personality disorders. Children, the elderly, and the disabled are labeled at-risk due to their dependency on others, sparse coping strategies and resources, and economic disadvantages. Additionally, individuals who experience extra stressors, low-self esteem, and have a poor sense of self are also at risk of developing a disorder rather than use resiliency (Petersen & Walker, 2003).
One extreme reaction to trauma exposure is the elicitation of a personality disorder, specifically Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
The focus of this paper is three-fold. First, it compares two treatment approaches: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR). These are different in technique and philosophy when regarding the processing of traumatic events. Second, it reviews the evidence for co-morbidity (simultaneous occurrence) between BPD and PTSD. Finally, this paper will propose a strategic plan for the most effective treatment for individuals with BPD and PTSD symptoms.

Every discipline has its canon: the set of standard texts, approaches, examples, and stories by which it is recognized and which its members repeatedly invoke and employ. Although the last twenty-five years have seen the influence of interdisciplinary approaches to legal studies expand, there has been little recent consideration of what is and what ought to be canonical in the study of law today.Legal Canons brings together fifteen essays which seek to map out the legal canon and the way in which law is taught today. In order to understand how the twin ideas of canons and canonicity operate in law, each essay focuses on a particular aspect, from contracts and constitutional law to questions of race and gender. The ascendance of law and economics, feminism, critical race theory, and gay legal studies, as well as the increasing influence of both rational-actor methodology and postmodernism, are all scrutinized by the leading scholars in the field. A timely and comprehensive volume, Legal Canons articulates the need for, and means to, opening the debate on canonicity in legal studies.Table of Contents

In his more-than-four-decade tenure as the President of Hampton University—one of 107 Historically Black Colleges and Universities in America—Dr. William R. Harvey has been a champion of the cultural impact and value of HBCUs, demonstrated by the achievements of their numerous notable alumni. Their success is no coincidence. It is the result of a faultless formula that sets HBCUs apart and helps their students thrive—a formula built on core tenets, including displaying moral and wholesome values at all times, continuously pursuing character growth, and embracing communal responsibilities whenever possible.
The mission of Dr. Harvey is to represent Blackness to its highest degree at every opportunity. He is a passionate believer in the remarkability of the Black diaspora in all its complexity and beauty. That conviction drives the timeless lessons he’s adhered to and has instilled in his students: the power of dress to establish respect; the importance of integrity; financial accountability; reverence for elders. It is these tried-and-true lessons and others that have uniquely prepared and propelled HBCU students to success for generations.
The Historically Black Colleges and Universities' Guide to Excellence is a thoughtful and knowledgeable account of what it truly takes to successfully navigate a white world as a Black person while retaining one’s core Blackness. Practical and proven, it lays the groundwork for individual and communal Black prosperity.

By the time our Founding Fathers were ready to establish an independent nation, the idea of religious tolerance had become deeply ingrained in this brave new country's design. So much so that when the United States Constitution was ratified, it contained a document known as The Bill of Rights—ten amendments detailing the rights of this country's citizens. And the very First Amendment states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. . . .”Over the past few decades, however, the power of the state has usurped a growing number of rights clearly ascribed to those who wish to practice their faith. This has certainly not gone unnoticed by many religious organizations. As the supreme knight of the Knights of Columbus, Carl Anderson has taken an active role in highlighting—and protecting against—this ever-growing governmental infringement over fundamental religious freedom. New York Times bestselling author Carl Anderson has gathered together many of his most thought-provoking speeches, articles, and essays that lay bare the facts of this unjustified restriction of religious beliefs. The power of his words makes it clear that if nothing is done now, there will continue to be more erosion of these special freedoms set forth by our Founding Fathers.

Leftist firebrand Fredrik deBoer exposes the lie at the heart of our educational system and demands top-to-bottom reform.Everyone agrees that education is the key to creating a more just and equal world, and that our schools are broken and failing. Proposed reforms variously target incompetent teachers, corrupt union practices, or outdated curricula, but no one acknowledges a scientifically-proven fact that we all understand intuitively: academic potential varies between individuals, and cannot be dramatically improved. In The Cult of Smart, educator and outspoken leftist Fredrik deBoer exposes this omission as the central flaw of our entire society, which has created and perpetuated an unjust class structure based on intellectual ability.Since cognitive talent varies from person to person, our education system can never create equal opportunity for all. Instead, it teaches our children that hierarchy and competition are natural, and that human value should be based on intelligence. These ideas are counter to everything that the left believes, but until they acknowledge the existence of individual cognitive differences, progressives remain complicit in keeping the status quo in place. This passionate, voice-driven manifesto demands that we embrace a new goal for education: equality of outcomes. We must create a world that has a place for everyone, not just the academically talented. But we’ll never achieve this dream until the Cult of Smart is destroyed.
