Sinossi

Arthur Christopher Benson's "Essays" is a profound collection of reflective musings that traverse a wide array of themes, including human experience, nature, spirituality, and the intricacies of society. Known for his rich prose and insightful observations, Benson's style marries clarity with a lyrical quality that invites readers to ponder alongside him. Set against the backdrop of the late Victorian and early Edwardian eras, these essays illuminate the societal transformations of the time, while engaging with perennial questions of morality and introspection that resonate still today. Benson, an accomplished writer and scholar, was immersed in the intellectual currents of his time, drawing inspiration from his broad education and familial ties—his brother Edward was a notable figure in literature. A close friend of figures like A.C. Swinburne and Henry James, Benson's writings often reflect a blend of introspection and social commentary that reveals the complexities of human nature and societal norms. His experiences as a member of the prominent Benson family, alongside his role as a public intellectual, shaped his perspective in these essays. This collection is recommended for readers who appreciate contemplative literature, as it challenges us to reflect on our own lives and society. Benson's eloquent style and thought-provoking themes make "Essays" not only a window into the soul of its author but also a mirror reflecting the reader's own existential inquiries.

Barry Eric Odell Pain was born at 3 Sydney Street in Cambridge on 28th September 1864. He was one of 4 children.
He was educated at Sedbergh School and then Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.
In 1889, Cornhill Magazine published his short story ‘The Hundred Gates’. This opened the way for Pain to advance his literary career on several fronts. He became a contributor to Punch and The Speaker, as well as joining the staff of both the Daily Chronicle and Black and White.
Pain was also a noted and prominent contributor to The Granta and from 1896 to 1928 a regular contributor to the Windsor Magazine.
It is often said that Pain was discovered by Robert Louis Stevenson, who compared his work to that of Guy de Maupassant. It’s an apt comparison. Pain was a master of disturbing prose but was also able to inject parody and light comedy into many of his works. A simple premise could in his hands suddenly expand into a world very real but somehow emotionally fraught and on the very edge of darkness.
Barry Pain died on 5th May 1928 in Bushey, Hertfordshire.

Captain Ulysses S. Grant rose to become general-in-chief of the United States Army in 1864. Was it destiny? Or was he just an ordinary man, opportunistically benefiting from the turmoil of the Civil War to advance to the highest military rank?

Soldier of Destiny reveals that Grant always possessed the latent abilities of a skilled commander—and he was able to develop these skills out West without the overwhelming pressure faced by more senior commanders in the Eastern theater at the beginning of the Civil War.

From 1861 to 1864, Grant went from being ambivalent about slavery to becoming one of the leading individuals responsible for emancipating the slaves. Soldier of Destiny tells the story of Grant's connection to slavery in far more detail than in previous biographies.

Grant's life story is a tale of redemption within the context of his fraught relationships with his antislavery father and his slaveholding wife. This narrative explores the poverty, inequality, and extraordinary vitality of the American West during a crucial time in our nation's history. Writers on Grant have tended to overlook his St. Louis years, even though they are essential for understanding his later triumphs.
