This timeless comedy of manners is considered one of Molière’s most probing and mature works. While it’s still an exemplar of 16th century farce, Molière went beyond his usual comic inventiveness to create a world of rich, complex characters, especially in the cynical title character Alceste, played here by the Tony Award-winning actor Brian Bedford.
Lead funding for this production is provided by the Sidney E. Frank Foundation.
This recording also includes an interview with Larry F. Norman author of “The Public Mirror: Molière and the Social Commerce of Depiction”.An L.A. Theatre Works full-cast performance. Directed by Rosalind Ayres. Translated by Richard Wilbur.

From London to Cornwall, then to Italy and France, a short, shabby priest takes on bandits, traitors and killers. Why is he so successful? The reason is that after years spent in the priesthood, Father Brown knows human nature and is not afraid of its dark side. Thus he understands criminal motivation and how to deal with it. The award-winning Colonial Radio Theatre on the Air has dramatized G.K. Chesterton's Father Brown stories from The Innocence of Father Brown with a full cast, music score, and sound effects.

    Included in Vol. 2:

"The Invisible Man"The inimitable Father Brown is called to help in the hunt for a mysterious killer, known only as an "invisible man."

"The Wrong Shape"Novelist Leonard Quinton has long been an eccentric, but his habits are driving his wife to the point of mania. When death finally comes to Quinton's unconventional home, it's fortunate that Father Brown and his good friend Flambeau are on hand.

"The Sins of Prince Saradine"A dream holiday turns into a nightmare for Father Brown and his best friend, Flambeau. Why has the notorious Prince Saradine come to England, and who wants him dead?

"The Hammer of God"Norman Bohun is a man with many enemies, so it comes as no surprise when he's eventually murdered. But Father Brown's biggest problem is in identifying a killer who must possess superhuman strength.

In the red corner: the muck, grit and harsh truths of life. In the blue corner: the beauty of the natural world and the vivid variety provided by imagination. Cathy Bryant is dancing about somewhere in between.

To continue the boxing ring metaphor to a silly (but possibly accurate) degree, the other two corners are culture and experience, the canvas is time and I'm on the ropes of conscience.

For Cathy is stuck as a misfit. Born in the south, she lives in the north. from a middle class home, she is working class by poverty and experience. She knows what it's like to be homeless, and what it's like to pick a dirty penny off the pavement and be happy to have it, and she also know the correct way to address a duchess, and whether to put the milk in first. She doesn't fit in anywhere - except at poetry events, where you can't know whether the person next to you is a convicted felon, a linguistics professor, or both.
