Summary

This unique edition of Anton Chekhov's collected novellas and short stories has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices.
Excerpt:
"Life is a vexatious trap; when a thinking man reaches maturity and attains to full consciousness he cannot help feeling that he is in a trap from which there is no escape."Ward No. Six (1892)
Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) was a Russian physician, dramaturge and author who is often referred to as one of the seminal figures in the birth of early modernism in the theatre. He made no apologies for the difficulties he posed to the readers, insisting that the role of an artist was to ask questions, not to answer them.

Jens Müller was one of only three men who successfully escaped from Stalag Luft III in March 1944—the break that later became the basis for the famous film The Great Escape.
Müller was no. 43 of the 76 prisoners of war who managed to escape from the camp (now in Zagan, Poland). Together with Per Bergsland he stowed away on a ship to Gothenburg. The escapees sought out the British consulate and were flown from Stockholm to Scotland. From there they were sent by train to London and shortly afterwards to "Little Norway" in Canada.
Müller's book about his wartime experiences was first published in Norwegian in 1946, titled Tre kom tilbake (Three Came Back). This translation will correct the impression—set by the film and Charles Bronson—that the men who escaped successfully were American and Australian.
In a vivid, informative memoir Müller details what life in the camp was like, how the escapes were planned and executed, and the story of his personal breakout and success reaching the RAF Leuchars base in Scotland.

In the fall of 2015, Steven Heighton made an overnight decision to travel to the frontlines of the Syrian refugee crisis in Greece and enlist as a volunteer. Hearrived on the isle of Lesvos with a duffel bag and a dubious grasp of Greek, his mother’s native tongue, and worked on the landing beaches and in OXY—ajerrybuilt, ad hoc transit camp providing simple meals, dry clothes, and a brief rest to refugees after their crossing from Turkey. In a town deserted by the touriststhat had been its lifeblood, Heighton—alongside the exhausted locals and underequipped international aid workers—found himself thrown into emergency rolesfor which he was woefully unqualified. From the brief reprieves of volunteer-refugee soccer matches to the riots of Camp Moria, Reaching Mithymna is a gripping firsthand account of the crisis andan engaged exploration of the borders that divide us and the ties that bind.

Tom King's personal memoirs range across a life of exceptional activity and interest. Aged nineteen, he found himself commanding a military company against Mau Mau terrorists in Kenya; at thirty he became the youngest ever general manager in a major printing and packaging group, in charge of a factory with a staff of 700 and dealing with nine different trade unions. Elected as an MP in 1970, nine years later he took through the legislation that transformed London's vast derelict docklands into the thriving business district of Canary Wharf. Subsequently his five Secretary of State roles saw him carrying through the law that gave union members the right to a secret ballot before a strike, then facing IRA terrorism and Unionist opposition when he launched what became the start of the peace process, then watching the fall of the Soviet Union and the Iron Curtain and being responsible for the massive UK deployment to help liberate Kuwait. Told with a sharp recollection of his fifty years in Parliament, Tom King's memoirs cover a particularly interesting period of history and his part in shaping the events that led up to the world we live in now.

A famed zookeeper reflects on his lifelong love of animals—and his decision to build them a home—in this memoir by the author of the Corfu Trilogy. The first word Gerald Durrell could say with any clarity was “zoo.” Animals were his passion. His early years in India were full of routine visits to the local zoo, and if his nursemaid attempted to deviate from this routine, the result was usually a tantrum.   Years later, when Durrell decided to set up the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust—which would later become the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust—he didn’t want it to be like other zoos. He didn’t want a place where animals were simply imprisoned, where parents reluctantly brought their children to get sick on ice cream. More than a place for entertainment, Durrell’s zoo needed to be a place for education, research, and conservation. But achieving his goal would force him to question if wild animals really did belong in the care of humans.  The Stationary Ark is an entertaining and thoughtful look at a career in zookeeping from the man who inspired acclaimed Masterpiece production The Durrells in Corfu, which aired on public television.  This ebook features an illustrated biography of Gerald Durrell including rare photos from the author’s estate.

Humanitarian crises like those in Syria’s Aleppo sometimes make headlines. But how do we identify such atrocities when they are occurring thousands of miles away? A new program at UC Berkeley is training students to leverage social media, geolocation and other high-tech tools to document human rights abuses, and their findings have been brought to the UN. Special correspondent Cat Wise reports.

Historical true crime tales from this not-so-quiet New York City borough.

Despite its reputation as the least bustling of New York’s five boroughs, Staten Island has seen its share of violence and murder—dating back even to its days as a sleepy farming community in the mid-eighteenth century. The 1920 discovery of a woman’s body by two young boys walking their dog remains unsolved. An inmate at Sailors’ Snug Harbor—a retirement home for seamen—shot a preacher in cold blood. Shocking and horrific stories of killers and their victims such as these plague Staten Island’s otherwise pleasant past.

From the handsome soldier convicted of his Russian wife's shooting in New Dorp Beach to the New Brighton guard beaten to death while protecting seized whiskey during Prohibition, local historian Patricia Salmon uncovers Staten Island’s most chilling tales of crime—both the infamous and the long forgotten.
