McCarthy, and another local landowner, John Turner, are both Australian expatriates, and Lestrade was originally engaged by Turner's daughter, Alice, who believes James is innocent. Holmes interviews James, and then inspects the scene of the murder, deducing a third man was present. Realising Holmes has solved the case, Turner confesses to the crime, revealing that McCarthy was blackmailing him due to Turner's criminal past. Holmes does not reveal the crime, but secures James's release because of the presence of a third person at the crime scene.

  "The Three Musketeers" is a short story by Rudyard Kipling which introduces three fictional British soldiers serving in India in the later nineteenth century: the privates Learoyd, Mulvaney and Ortheris. These characters appear in many early Kipling stories. "The Three Musketeers" was first published in the Civil and Military Gazette on 11 March 1887. It appeared in book form in Plain Tales from the Hills (1888).This is the first appearance of Kipling's 'Soldiers Three', Terence Mulvaney the Irishman (pronounced Mulvanny), John Learoyd from Yorkshire, and the London cockney, Stanley Ortheris. They are experienced old soldiers, crafty, tough, and humorous. Here a visiting Lord has asked for the regiment to be turned out for an extra parade, which is deeply unwelcome to all. The Three stage a mock abduction, in which his carriage is run away with, amid much noise and many murderous shouts. They then come to the rescue, finding him terrified by 'the bandits' and too shaken to attend the parade which is cancelled. He rewards them handsomely.

  The Chronicles of Clovis - which was published in 1911 - was the third of Saki's collections of short stories. The character of Clovis Sangrail is, like Saki's earlier hero, Reginald, vain, sarcastic, and self-regarding and another vehicle for Saki's delicious, biting wit satirizing Edwardian high society in some of the funniest exquisite literary miniatures.Saki was the pen name of Hector Hugh Monro. He was born in Burma in 1870, where his father was a senior official in the Burma police. From the age of two, he lived with two maiden aunts and his grandmother in Devon and was educated in Exmouth and at the Bedford Grammar School. Later he travelled in Europe with his father. He joined the Burma police but resigned after a year because of ill health and returned to England, where he began his writing career as a journalist and short story writer for magazines and newspapers.
