Summary

This comprehensive history of these unique locomotives covers everything from performance issues to sightings, detail differences and liveries.   The Type 2 Bo-Bo Diesel-Electric Classes 21 & 29 locomotives were constructed by the North British Locomotive Company in the early 1960s. Used in the Scottish region of British Railway, they ran into numerous problems and were withdrawn from service within a decade. Due in part to their short careers, these locomotives remain something of a mystery to train enthusiasts. The scant information available on them is very often riddled with misinformation.   This authoritative volume corrects the record, presenting the most comprehensive and accurate account of the NBL Classes 21 & 29. Fully illustrated with photographs and detailed line drawings, this volume offers individual locomotive histories, complete technical specifications, accident and fire damage reports, storage histories, and a complete account of their disposal at both private companies and Glasgow Works.

She also traces the interface between the experience of profound loss and the search for emotional restoration.

Most people aspire to become property owners and view real estate investments as an important way to build wealth and security. Mortgages are the norm. But does this system truly serve the well-being of either the economy or the individual? Martin Adams shares a view that profiting from land ownership causes social and cultural decline as well as environmental devastation. He introduces a radically new economic model that points to a more fair and abundant reality for everyone. He says this about mortgages, “As long as it remains an ongoing reality for the majority of human beings to have to pay other human beings for the land that they’re standing on, the economic system will forever cause wealth inequality at a core level.” Tune into this dynamic dialogue in order to fully understand his vision of a more equitable economic system that takes banks out of the picture and puts community in the center of economic of wealth and prosperity. Theodore Roosevelt was a colorful adventurer, statesman, and president. But he always felt that the most essential role he played was that of father to his six children. In A Bully Father, noted historical editor Joan Paterson Kerr brings together a collection of his letters, spanning the years between 1898 and 1919, which convey all the boundless affection he felt for his family. Although Roosevelt’s responsibilities often took him far from home, he remained keenly interested in the daily lives of his four sons and two daughters. Even as he watched steam shovels dig the Panama Canal, he wrote letters filled with vivid, accessible anecdotes to his children. Countless questions about their adventures, friendships, and activities sprinkle the pages. Always a prolific reader and writer, Roosevelt composed an astonishing 150,000 letters by the time he died in 1919. Jean Paterson Kerr’s perceptive biographical essay helps the listener see this lively, carefully selected part of the collection as an absorbing family chronicle.

Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt was a Prussian geographer, naturalist, explorer, and influential proponent of romantic philosophy. Many consider him to be the last of the great polymaths. After his death in 1859, the scientific world began to divide into separate disciplines, each with its own knowledgeable but narrowly defined experts. Humboldt’s mind encompassed all that was then known of nature in one great whole. He could well be considered the father of modern ecology and earth studies. His great scientific and literary achievement was the multi-volume Cosmos, twenty years in the writing, in which he attempted to describe the known physical world. Humboldt’s lyrical style of writing influenced the subsequent genre of nature writing as well as many of the towering figures of the Romantic movement. This Librivox recording is of the Introduction to Cosmos. The Introduction gives a good measure of breadth of Humboldt’s mind and is a pleasure to read or hear because of its literary felicity. This reading omits the copious footnotes in favor of maintaining the flow of thought of the body of the text. Also included are the translator’s preface which contains a short biography of Humboldt as well as the author’s own preface. - Summary by Wikipedia and david wales
