Summary

In 1946, a returning World War II veteran is determined to reclaim his place among professional baseball's upper echelon and win back the woman he once fell for. Two months into the new season, at the top of his game, he abandons his team, casting aside his fame and riches and vanishing forever from the public eye. What drives a man to walk away from everything he cherishes, never to be heard from again?

THE BATTER'S BOX follows the path of Will Jamison, a star player with the Washington Senators who enlists in the U.S. Army following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. When the war ends, Jamison returns to Washington, a decorated hero tormented by deep emotional scars. Burdened with a crushing guilt and harrowing memories he cannot escape, Jamison's life is consumed by an explosive temper, sleepless nights, and a gradual descent into alcoholism. Will he continue, alone with his anguish and misery? Or will he level with those around him, including the woman he loves, and seek the professional care he desperately needs, even at the risk of exposing his most closely guarded secrets?

The ultimate keepsake for every pickleball fan—from a dink shot to the kitchen, everything a pickleballer needs to know in this guide to the world’s greatest recreational sport, packed with lots of joy, good humor, and even a little bit of wisdom.

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America. Easy to learn, but impossible to master, it’s no wonder that nearly 5 million people nationwide have picked up their paddles and taken to the court. But people aren’t just dabbling in this up-and-coming activity, they are obsessed; some hit the court as many as five, six, even seven times a week. As Vanity Fair put it, pickleball has “won over everyone, from Leonardo DiCaprio to your grandparents.”
Pickleball Is Life is the first book of its kind celebrating the weird and wonderful world of pickleball. It will take readers on a journey from the sport’s quirky origins to its modern-day cult following. Along the way, learn more pickleball knowledge, including etiquette tips, a DIY court, obscure rules, and pointers for (good-natured) trash talk. Also included are interviews with members of the three founding families from Bainbridge Island who are still very much involved in the sport and its growth.
People of all ages, athletic abilities, and backgrounds have fallen in love with pickleball. Sure, it’s a good workout, but it’s also a cheerful way to interact with others—something folks crave now more than ever. So, whether they’re uninitiated or obsessed, this book will help readers find even more to love about the world’s greatest sport.

Snooker is a game of precision. Under the gaze of television cameras and with thousands of pounds at stake the professionals might claim to perform under demanding conditions. A spot of chalk on the cue ball may be the difference between the victorious spotlight and the obscurity of defeat. Life can be very different at the other end of the scale where keen amateurs learn their game in more adventurous circumstances, where 'home' table advantage is considerable and to play more than once with the same cue is coincidence. The Book of Snooker Disasters and Bizarre Records documents with indecent relish disastrous interruptions to professional play that vary from exploding light bulbs and leaking roofs, to the unwelcome sounds of spectators excessively filled with food or drink. Slanting tables, dead cushions, tight pockets, oval balls and corkscrew cues combine with split trousers and burst braces to make snooker a game that must always be 'played with considerable inventive skill and no less a sense of humour. The book is introduced by six times World Champion Steve Davis, OBE, who remembers some of the flukes and disasters that have punctuated his own career.

Brilliant, witty, perceptive essays about fly-fishing, the natural world, and life in general by the acknowledged master of fishing writers."Good fishing and good writing use the same skills," writes John Gierach, "whether you're after a trout or a story, you won’t get that far with brute force. You’re better off to watch, wait, and remain calm . . . letting it all happen, rather than trying to make it happen." As the wry and perceptive essays in Another Lousy Day in Paradise prove, Gierach knows his writing as well as his fishing.Paradise, Gierach shows us, is relative; it can be found in the guilty luxury of fishing private waters or when one is soaked to the skin, in a small canoe on a big lake in a storm a hundred miles from anywhere, exhilarated after a day's fishing. There are also pleasures to be found in unexpected places: solitary fishing trips, fishing for less-appreciated fish like carp, or meeting a guide who at first seems like an inarticulate ax murderer but who proves to be a "Zen master among fishing guides." The point is to let things unfold as they will—because after all, says Gierach, "Basically, the world is a big, dumb trout, and you’re a fisherman with all the time in the world." As Gierach fans know, this is a description of paradise.
