Summary

Today is Alec-Ryuu's thirteenth birthday. And he takes his final test in preparation for joining the resistance against the dreaded and powerful Black Dragon.
Nonmagical beings have been forced into hiding by the dragon's rule, and Alec-Ryuu's small village lives under the constant threat of exposure and enslavement. Alec-Ryuu, or Ryuu as he prefers to be called, is not your average human. He is the son of a being of great power—stronger, smarter, and faster than friends and rivals alike.
A gold-embroidered box in a cliffside cave sits waiting for Ryuu and his friends. The box's contents offer the strength to finally strike back at the Black Dragon, should the young warriors have the opportunity.
But that opportunity may be over before it begins. Emissaries of the Black Dragon have discovered Ryuu's village, and the time has come for the ultimate choice: surrender to a life of slavery, or fight—and possibly die—for freedom.
A fascinating mix of fantasy, science fiction, and mythology, Dragon Knight Chronicles begins the story of Ryuu's struggle against the most powerful being in the galaxy.

This anthology of the illustrator’s New York Times blog features a chapter of all-new material: “a masterpiece of sophisticated humor” (Library Journal, starred review).

In July 2008, illustrator and designer Christoph Niemann began Abstract City, a visual blog for the New York Times. His posts were inspired by the desire to re-create simple and everyday observations and stories from his own life that everyone could relate to. In Niemann’s hands, mundane experiences such as riding the subway or trying to get a good night’s sleep were transformed into delightful flights of visual fancy.

In Abstract City, the struggle to keep up with housework becomes a battle against adorable but crafty goblins, and nostalgia about New York manifests in simple but strikingly spot-on LEGO creations. This brilliantly illustrated collection of reflections on modern life includes all sixteen of the original blog posts as well as a new chapter created exclusively for the book.

“Usually, when you find physical evidence at a murder scene, it helps the investigation. It points the police in the direction of the suspects and most of the time helps them to solve and close the case. So, when a body turns up with its head smashed in, the first thing the detectives do is search for evidence. When a hammer covered in blood stained fingerprints is found, the case seems on its way to being solved, until it is revealed to whom those fingerprints belong. On paper, it should be easy. A hammer covered in prints, prints linked to someone in the system, someone who has a history of violence and has even been suspected of murder before. It should be easy, but it’s not, because as well as having a record, this same someone also happens to be dead. How can a dead man commit murder? How can he leave evidence at the scene and call the victim’s relatives after the fact? Are these murders related to the strange rituals and dabblings with the occult taken by a known criminal? The Damned Hands is a story of murder, haunting, and the occult, where following the evidence, leads to some very dark places indeed.

After losing his leg—and his trademark helmet—B.D. returns home from Iraq to begin a remarkable journey of healing in this Doonesbury book.

On a road outside Fallujah, an RPG blows apart a Humvee and upends the life of a former football star named B.D. As a medevac chopper swoops down, the wounded Guardsman hears “Not your time, bro. Not today”. The Long Road Home: One Step at a Time chronicles seven months of cutting-edge cartooning, during which B.D.—and readers of the strip—experienced the kind of personal transformation no one seeks.

B.D. survives first-response Baghdad triage, evacuation to Landstuhl, and visits by innumerable celebs, both red and blue in hue. He's awed in turn by morphine, take-no-guff nurses, his fellow amps, high-tech prostheses that cost more than luxury cars, and his family, including the daughter who hand-delivers succor, one aspirin at a time.

From rebuilding tissue to rebuilding social skills to rebuilding lives, B.D's inspiring, insightful, and darkly humorous story confirms that it can take a village, or at least a ward, to raise a soldier when he's gone down. “Thank you for getting blown up,” offers one of B.D.'s visiting players. Replies the coach, “Just doing my job.”

Immanuel Kant laid the foundations of modern Western thought. Every subsequent major philosopher owes a profound debt to Kant's attempts to delimit human reason as an appropriate object of philosophical enquiry. And yet, Kant's relentless systematic formalism made him a controversial figure in the history of the philosophy that he helped to shape.
Introducing Kant focuses on the three critiques of Pure Reason, Practical Reason and Judgement. It describes Kant's main formal concepts: the relation of mind to sensory experience, the question of freedom and the law and, above all, the revaluation of metaphysics. Kant emerges as a diehard rationalist yet also a Romantic, deeply committed to the power of the sublime to transform experience. The illustrated guide explores the paradoxical nature of the pre-eminent philosopher of the Enlightenment, his ideas and explains the reasons for his undiminished importance in contemporary philosophical debates.
