Summary

This book aims to provide engineers with an overview knowledge of disciplines such as sociopolitics, psychology, economics, and leadership. Engineers are disproportionately represented in senior management and in leadership roles, and many work outside typical engineering roles. Vital to their success are technical skills, but also, crucially, an understanding of the societal setting within which engineering takes place. Engineers that leverage their technical and analytical abilities with an understanding of the social context are enormously successful, both professionally and in terms of broader impact. This book originated from a recognition that this capacity of engineers can be enhanced with an understanding of the 'human forces', the phenomena that underpin and govern human interactions. The key ideas were assembled with domain experts from each field, to provide the key critical insights and how these might be practically applied by engineers. The authors provide the basis for the learning necessary to guide high-level strategic decisions, manage teams of diverse skillsets in complex environments, communicate in the context of management and decision-making, and to excel at the interface between a technical discipline and non-scientific fields. Prof. Andrej Atrens is Professor of Materials Engineering at The University of Queensland (UQ). He has experience in Universities and Research Institutes in Switzerland, Thailand, Canada, France, Germany, Sweden, China, USA, Fiji and Australia. Dr. Aleks Atrens is an Honorary Research Fellow at The University of Queensland (UQ). He earned his BE (Hons) in Chemical Engineering in 2007, and his PhD in 2011, both at UQ, where he has subsequently been a lecturer and researcher.

This bestselling account of an environmental disaster’s aftermath offers “a firsthand look at the Gulf after the news cycle ended . . . brilliant.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Winner of an ASLE Book Award and a Reed Award

Named a Top Book from the South by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Traveling the shores of the Gulf from east to west with oceanographers, subsistence fishermen, seafood distributors, and other longtime Gulf residents, environmental advocate and acclaimed author of All the Wild That Remains David Gessner offers a lively, arresting account of the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

With The Tarball Chronicles, Gessner tells a story that extends beyond the archetypal oil-soaked pelican, beyond politics, beyond BP, and beyond other oil-spill accounts. Instead, heart on his sleeve and beer in hand, he explores the ecosystem of the Gulf as a complicated whole and focuses on the people whose lives and livelihoods have been jeopardized by the spill. With his signature combination of intellect, passion, and humor, Gessner asks how much we are willing to sacrifice for the conveniences of modern life.

'Of all the places where I feel the translucency of things, places that are thin for me, bluebell woods are first among them.'
Some travellers are driven by the need to scale a natural wonder, or to see a city's sights or a place of history. Others, like Alice Maddicott, travel in search of a particular scene, feeling or atmosphere, often inspired by music, literature and art. Taking us deep into our emotional and creative responses to place, this extraordinary book explores the author's relentless travelling, from the heat of Sicily to the mountains of Japan. With her uniquely lyrical approach to psycho-geography, Maddicott explores the relationship with landscape that is the very essence of human creativity.
From seventeenth-century salons of Paris to the underground culture and crumbling balconies of modern Tbilisi, through writers as diverse as Italo Calvino and L. M. Montgomery and artists like Ana Mendieta and eighteenth-century girls embroidering their lives, Tender Maps is a beautifully evocative book of travel, culture and imagination that transports readers in time and place.
'A rich and beguiling work of literary travel memoir that nimbly tracks the wider contours of the world in terms of feeling, memory, introspection and the imagination.' - Travis Elborough, author of Atlas of Vanishing Places

The Elements of Mammalogy is one of seven in a Series of First Books of Natural History Prepared for the Use of Schools and Colleges. This succinct little textbook from 1845 presents an introduction to mammalogy. The information, albeit not current, is still interesting and of use as a general overview of mammal biology. The classification of mammals has changed considerably since this time. The author was a surgeon in the U.S. Navy and president of the Academy of Natural Sciences. (Summary by A. Gramour)

"Pithy, funny, exasperated, and informed . . . You cannot read a more important hundred pages than Stop Saving the Planet!" —Richard White, author of The Republic for Which It StandsWe've been "saving the planet" for decades! . . . And environmental crises just get worse. All this hybrid driving and LEED building and carbon trading seems to accomplish little to nothing—and low-income communities continue to suffer the worst consequences. Why aren't we cleaning up the toxic messes and rolling back climate change? And why do so many Americans hate environmentalists?Jenny Price says Enough already! with this short, fun, fierce manifesto for an environmentalism that is hugely more effective, a whole lot fairer, and infinitely less righteous. She challenges you, corporate sustainability officers, and the EPA to think and act completely anew—and to start right now—to ensure a truly habitable future.
